December. The ‘Shoppers Special’
consisting of eight cars
from the 1930s runs 10 a.m.
and 5 p.m. on the F train between
2nd Avenue and A/C/D
Harlem 125th Street stations
in Manhattan, Sundays thru
December 24th.
Riding the old subway
cars reminds me of a time
when it was common to fi nd
both penny gum and soda machines
dispensing products at
many subway stations. Clean
and safe bathrooms were
readily available. It was a time
when people respected authority
and law.
Previous generations of
riders did not litter subway
stations and buses, by leaving
behind gum, candy wrappers,
paper cups, bottles and
newspapers. No one would
openly eat pizza, chicken or
other messy foods while riding
a bus or subway. Everyone
paid their way and there was
no fare evasion.

MTA’s nostalgia

Dear editor,
It is refreshing to hear that

Authority NYC Transit
has begun running a series of
nostalgia trains and buses to

The Bronx Times receives
commentaries from Bronx
leaders that are interesting,
but do not fall within the purview
of this newspaper. This
new feature showcases these
other issues.
Statement from Councilman
Ritchie Torres, chair of
the NYC Council’s Committee
on Oversight & Investigations
regarding the mayor’s dismissal
of the Department of Investigations
Commissioner Mark Peters...
The DOI commissioner’s
letter reveals a pattern of interference
with DOI investigations
and intimidation against
DOI offi cials that borders on
the unethical and should be illegal.
No public offi cial should
ever attempt to suppress investigative
fi ndings while keeping
the rest of us in the dark about
our own government. The next
DOI commissioner has a moral
obligation to press ahead with
pre-existing investigations
.......AS STATED

House Democratic Caucus
chairman Joe Crowley
issued the following statement
on the election of Hakeem Jeffries
as the chair of the House
Democratic Caucus... I offer my
congratulations to Hakeem Jeffries
on his election as chair of
the House Democratic Caucus
for the 116th Congress. I am
incredibly proud that a fellow
New Yorker and my friend will
help lead the Democratic Caucus..
Borough President Ruben
Diaz, Jr. applauded the
expanded Career and Technical
Education Program... It has
long been a priority of mine to
ensure that our students are
prepared for higher education
and the workforce, and doing
so requires equal access to
Career and Technical Education
programs in our public
schools. The announcement
of expanded CTE options for
public school students is a welcome
one, though we still have
considerable work to do in this
regard.
Assemblymember Victor
M. Pichardo refl ects on
the passing of former President
George H. W. Bush... My
thoughts and prayers go out to
the family of Former-President
George H.W Bush. Thank you
President Bush for your many
years of service for our country,
as a distinguished pilot in
the United States Navy during
the second World War, a member
of Congress, an ambassador
for the United States, as
the Director of the CIA, and as
the Commander-in-Chief of the
United States of America. May
your devotion and commitment
be an example for many
Americans across the ages to
follow.
A statement on Hanukkah
from Assemblyman Michael
Blake...Tonight, our Jewish
community joins family and
friends to celebrate Hanukkah
by lighting the fi rst of eight candles
to commemorate the rededication
of the Second Temple
in Jerusalem in 165 BCE.
May the lighting of the Menorah
remind us of the strength
and resilience of the Jewish
people, especially in the face
of rising anti-Semitism. Chag
Urim Sameach.
Councilman Fernando
Cabrera stated the following
regarding the NYC OEM Commissioner’s
fi ring...Offi ce of
Emergency Management Commissioner
Joseph Esposito is
the latest victim of the city’s
poor response to the November
15 snow emergency. Commissioner
Esposito should not be
fi red. Commissioner Esposito
was not responsible for allocation
of staff resources, or the
decision to severely understaff
the Bronx and upper Manhattan.
(The following statement
was sent to the members of the
City Island Civic Association.)
I wanted to take a moment
and share my thoughts and
gratitude to all who’ve joined
the CICA and got engaged in
the process of our election.
It was unprecedented on
many levels, as I’m told our
membership has never been
higher.
That coupled with a record
breaking voter turn-out, shows
how much we all care for each
other and our community.
In my opinion at no time
has City Island shown such diversity
amongst its residents.
Our civic association members
refl ect every race, creed and
color with a rich cross section
of soci economic and religious
backgrounds including the
LGBTQ community.
City Island is all about tolerance
and acceptance.
I’m proud to serve as the
CICA president and will continue
to fi ght, protect and advocate
for all its residents, maintaining
the tenor and tone that
makes us all proud to call City
Island our home!

MTA’s still
a good deal
Dear editor,
For those public offi cials
and others who oppose any
fare increases and will be
quick to demagogue on this
issue, just how would the
MTA balance fi nancial shortfalls?
Which capital improvement
projects should the
MTA cancel to help balance
the budget and avoid fare
increases? Which route(s)
would you support service
reductions to save operating
dollars?
Would you volunteer to reduce
service, cancel or delay
any capital projects benefi ting
constituents in your district?
What future union contracts
would you ask for more
fl exible work assignments
and reduce salary increases.
Will you ask employees to increase
their contributions toward
medical coverage and
retirement pensions?
MTA services continue to
be one of the best bargains in
town.
TANSTAFFL or “there
ain’t no such thing as a free
lunch” or in this case a free
ride.

The MTA
Board too!
Dear editor,
If Mr. Schweizer (Letters
to the Editor 11/30/2018) wants
the mayor of this city to resign,
so must the entire MTA
Board resign, too. Yes, I know
the mayor and his commissioners
in this city screwed
up big time during this past
snowstorm but so did the entire
MTA Board, not just Joe
Lahota.
