Bill introduced to paint curbs red
next to fi re hydrants and bus stops
extends. Deutsch’s bill aims
to remove the guesswork
when a driver goes to park
close to the space reserved
for a hydrant or bus stop.
Senator-elect Alessandra Biaggi (c) meets with the Throggs Neck Community Action Program.
Councilmembers Chaim
Deutsch and Justin Brannan,
and Borough President Ruben
Diaz Jr. have introduced
a bill that would require the
city to paint curbs next to fi re
hydrants and bus stops red
for the exact distance that
parking is illegal.
The colored paint would
be used to alert motorists as
to where they can and cannot
park.
Tickets are frequently issued
to motorists unaware of
the exact distance they must
clear from a fi re hydrant, or
of exactly how far a bus stop
BRONX TIMES REPORTER, D 36 ECEMBER 14-20, 2018 BTR
“This bill would provide
clarity to people who park on
its streets, both to prevent illegal
parking by drivers and
to make it easier for enforcement
to ticket those drivers
parked illegally. Street signs
can be confusing, and far too
often our business communities
will note that a parking
ticket might prevent a shopper
from ever returning to
that community, choosing
instead to spend their money
somewhere with more ample
parking. This bill will make
street use clear for everyone,”
said Diaz.
Having been introduced,
the bill must pass through
committee hearings and a fi -
nal Council vote.
TNCAP thanks Senatorelect
Alessandra Biaggi for attending
our monthly coalition
meeting on Wednesday, December
5 and for spending the
time to meet individually with
each member and to listen to
the members’ concerns for the
Throggs Neck Community. Everyone
felt heard and valued
by Ms. Biaggi’s presence. The
TNCAP members refl ected on
her passion and commitment
to the values that we all embrace.
This was a memorable
event for TNCAP.
Some of the issues discussed
were the concern about the new
trends in vaping and fl avored
tobacco, the high rate of opioid
overdoses in this community
and the impact that the legalization
of recreational marijuana
will have on our youth.
Other issues included more
services for mental health issues,
anti-bullying programs
and suicide prevention. (The
data from NYC Epi Data No.92
reports 21.9% of Bronx high
school youth reported using
marijuana in past 30 days, compared
to Brooklyn 18.2%, Manhattan
21.1%, Queens 17% and
Staten Island 22.4%. In addition,
according to NYC Health
2019, every 6 hours, someone
dies of a drug overdose in NYC,
and in 2017, the highest rate
and largest number of overdose
deaths was among Bronx
residents at 31.9% compared to
Staten Island at 27.3%.)
TNCAP is excited and looking
forward to a long and collaborative
relationship with
Ms. Biaggi.
We are both on the same
page in having a strong, vital,
committed coalition that
works together for the betterment
of it members, their respective
organizations and the
community-at-large.

partnerships over 20 years
