Health Department installs new
public artwork in fi ve NYC parks
The New York City Health Department,
in partnership with NYC Parks,
announced the completion of fi ve art
projects in public parks in east Harlem,
the south Bronx, eastern Queens, and
central Brooklyn.
The initiative, Art in the Parks:
Active Open Space, funds local community
based organizations to install
large-scale public art installations to
promote physical activity in neighborhoods
with disproportionately high
rates of chronic disease. The installations
range from ground murals to interactive
sculptures and were developed
to refl ect the cultures and history
of each neighborhood.
Members and residents of the community
provided input on the design
of the work and, in some cases, participated
in the creation of the artwork itself.
These projects will remain on display
through September 2019 and were
produced in partnership with the Fund
for Public Health in New York City and
made possible with funding provided by
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Assemblyman Marcos A. Crespo
said, “Great things are happening in
our community and while it is important
to read about them, it’s even better
to actually see the many positive
things. Through the installation of public
art by the NYC Department of Health
and Mental Hygiene, in partnership
with NYC Parks; Concrete Plant Park
will serve as a more vibrant welcoming
space for residents and commuters.
I am grateful not only for the partnership
that the agencies were able to create,
but I am also thankful to the artist
and the Bronx River Alliance for helping
to generate a vision and bring that
vision to life.”
“Incorporating the ideas of local residents,
the ‘Rep Your Flag’ mural design
that’s been selected for Inwood Park embodies
the rich diversity that is such an
important strength of the Bronx,” Assemblywoman
Latoya Joyner said. “It
is a dynamic and colorful addition that
will enhance the enjoyment of Inwood
Park for families throughout the Mount
Eden community.”
Pichardo named to New Americans Task Force
Assemblyman Victor M. Pichardo
has been appointed as the chairperson
for the Task Force on New Americans
for the upcoming 2019 legislative session.
The Task Force has worked for
many years in the Assembly to search,
provide answers, and assist new immigrants
in the State of New York.
Assemblyman Pichardo hopes to continue
the positive work that the previous
chairs of the task force have ac-
complished.
“I would like to thank Speaker Carl
Heastie for appointing me as the chair
for the Task Force on New Americans.
In these times, when we have a federal
government that continuously devalues
immigrants’ humanity, it is important
for states to step up. I am looking
forward to continuing the work of
the task force to make sure that New
York State continues to be a beacon for
immigrants everywhere.” he said.

Christmas tree collections
The New York City Department of
Sanitation began its annual curbside collection
of Christmas trees on Wednesday,
January 2. Collection runs through Saturday,
January 12, weather permitting.
Residents should remove all stands,

trees out for collection. Clean, nonbagged

between Wednesday, January 2 and Saturday,
January 12, will be chipped, mixed
with leaves, and recycled into compost for
the city’s parks, institutions and community
gardens.
Those needing to get rid of mostly plastic
and metal fake Christmas trees should
consider selling or donating them. Donation
opportunities may be found at nyc.
gov/donate. If donation or resale is not an
option, remove all ornaments and lights,
and put them out next to your recycling on
regular recycling days.
The Department of Sanitation collected
more than 200,000 Christmas trees
for “tree-cycling” after Christmas 2017.
NYC Parks provides additional options

on Christmas day. Our deepest
condolences to his family.
Our brother Bill Vigger has
been in and out of the VA Hospital.
Hopefully by the time you read
this, Bill is at home and feeling
better.
Regular meetings are back after

Riverdale Choral Society recruitment
The Riverdale Choral Society invites
singers at all levels to join them for the
spring 2019 season. Open rehearsals
will be held on two Wednesdays, January
9 and January 16, at 7:30 p.m. They
welcome all voice ranges: soprano, alto,
tenor, and bass. Music director John
Lettieri is the conductor.
Singers who join the Choral Society
will be preparing for a concert on
Sunday, May 5, at which they will perform
Annelies, based on the Diary of
Anne Frank. The work was composed
by James Whitbourn with a libretto
by Melanie Challenger. The piece will
be performed using the chamber version
arranged for a small group of instruments,
choir, and soprano solo.
The concert will take place at Christ
Church Riverdale and will offer the
audience an opportunity to hear beautiful
music right here in Riverdale.
Since 1964, the Riverdale Choral
Society has been bringing joy to the
community through performances of
high-quality choral music. The welcoming,
diverse group of men and
women rehearses weekly under professional
artistic direction, singing
both traditional and contemporary
repertoire. Through live concerts and
community outreach, the chorus enriches
the cultural life of the greater
Riverdale area.
If you love singing and can read music
(you don’t have to be able to sight
read if you have a good musical ear),
consider joining them. Rehearsals will
be held every Wednesday from 7:30 to
9:45 p.m. at Christ Church Riverdale,
West 252nd Street and Henry Hudson
Parkway East, where there is street
parking available and easy access to
public transportation.
