Speed up MTA
ADA compliance WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP BRUNCH
Dear editor,
Here is one way to obtain
fi nancial support to pay for
accelerating the number of
subway stations to reach
compliance with the Americans
Disabilities Act. The
Metropolitan Transportation
Authority receives $1.4
billion in annual assistance
from various Federal Transit
Administration formula
funding grant programs. The
MTA, based upon the court’s
decision, will have to update
their long term Americans
Disability Act Key Stations
Compliance Plan. This is
currently in place and approved
by the Federal Transit
Administration Washington
Headquarters Offi ce of
Civil Rights.
Without an approved plan
in place, it is diffi cult for
the FTA to approve any new
grant funding. The upcoming
MTA $30 to $50 billion
2020 - 2024 Five Year Capital
Plan will probably have to
program up to a billion more
for NYC Transit to dramatically
increase the number of
additional subway stations
reaching full ADA compliance.
Who knows what other
projects and programs may
have to be cancelled in the
next $30 billion or more MTA
2020 - 2024 Five Year Capital
Plan to fi nd additional funding
for installation of ADA
compliant elevators at more
subway stations.

.......AS STATED
As Stated offers an array
of news breaking commentary
from our elected political
leaders every week. Feel free
to share your thoughts about
their views offered in this
week’s installment.
Congressman Adriano
Espaillat released the
following statement in response
to the tragedies at two
mosques in Christchurch, New
Zealand.....”This gross and
premeditated act of domestic
terrorism has led to the loss of
49 innocent lives. One coward
driven by hatred of Muslims
and ignorance of Islam took
up arms and with extreme
prejudice...Islamophobia and
white supremacy are not one
in the same. But the genesis of
these hateful ideologies continues
to become intertwined
in the minds of individuals
paralyzed by fear. There is no
empathy or capacity for introspection.
We must stand with
our Muslim communities here
and abroad; an Ummah made
stronger in tenor and unity.”
Councilman Fernando
Cabrera released the following
statement in response to
Congresswoman Alexandria
Ocasio-Cortez’s comments following
the mass shooting at a
New Zealand mosque.....“I am
shocked and appalled at the
unparalleled disrespect Representative
Alexandria Ocasio
Cortez has shown toward
people of faith. To those who
believe in the goodness of God,
prayer is the path to peace.
AOC is entitled to her own
beliefs but she has no right to
denigrate the beliefs of people
of faith- whether Muslim, Jewish,
Christian or any other- in
her quest for political notoriety.
People of faith are deeply
offended by her put-down of
prayer as meaningless. We
want effective gun control
measures but Representative
Ocasio-Cortez must apologize
for her offensive words.”
Assemblyman Victor M.
Pichardo’s statement on the
Assembly’s 2019-20 state budget
proposal to help improve
affordable housing in the
Bronx..... “At a time when the
federal government is turning
its back on public housing residents,
the Assembly is taking
action to protect New Yorkers.
“No one deserves to live
in substandard or hazardous
conditions because they can’t
afford to move. This funding
is the Assembly’s commitment
to a New York that looks out
for everyone, and I’ll continue
fi ghting to ensure that the fi -
nal budget invests in Bronx
families’ safety and security.”
Senator Luis Sepulveda
posted the following comment
on the current situation
at Bronx River Houses. ....”It
is unacceptable that Bronx
River Houses residents will
have to wait 20 years for their
lead paint issue to completely
clean up. While the Brooklyn
and Manhattan get priority,
the residents at Bronx River
Houses will be suffering its
consequences. I will do my
best to speed up the process
and make sure that our borough
is no longer at the bottom
(of the list).”
