St. Catharine Academy celebrates Women’s History Month
BRONX TIMES REPORTER, M BTR ARCH 22-28, 2019 77
Women’s History Month
is a perfect time to hear the
achievements of St. Catharine
Academy alumna, particularly
those who work in male
dominated professions. That
is exactly what happened on
Wednesday, March 13, when
Bronx natives Brunilda Nazario,
MD, Niko Broddie-Murray,
MD, and Nan-Etta Watson
Mack, Ret. Lt. Col. U.S.
Air Force, returned to SCA.
The event was sponsored and
organized by SCA’s Women’s
Empowerment Initiative.
Brunilda Nazario, MD, is
an endocrinologist and Lead
Medical Director of WebMD.
Niko Broddie-Murray, MD
is an internist and primary
care physician at U Conn
Health, and Nan-Etta Watson
Mack, while in active service,
was the fi rst female offi cer to
serve in Saudi Arabia during
Desert Storm, and one of the
few female offi cers to serve in
the Pentagon.
Their message to the assembly
of sophomores and juniors
was clear and straightforward:
“No matter where
you come from or whatever
you have been told, you can
do anything you want. You
have the power.”
Refl ecting on what she
heard, Kayla Reyes, a member
of the Women’s Empowerment
Initiative said, “Women
are powerful, women are
SCA students with guest speakers Brunilda Nazario, MD, Niko Broddie-Murray, MD, and Nan-Etta Watson Mack,

strong. We should be confi -
dent enough to do anything
especially since we have St.
Catharine Academy as our
base to build upon our future.”

Well it looks like spring is fi -
nally here. I just saw some crocus
next to the little snow pile.
Some interesting things are
happening in Country Club,
namely the arrival of Fordham
University‘s crew and sailing
teams. A meeting was held at
Community Board 10 this week
and it looks like Fordham’s
move to the former Westchester
Country Club property will
happen soon. This is very exciting
for the neighborhood
and so nice to have a new sport
within Country Club.
At this writing we do not
have any further news regarding
the tragic accident on the
Bruckner Expressway and
Country Club Road. Thank
you all who participated in
gathering information in support
of the 45th Precinct’s investigation.
And thank you
all who came out to march in
Sunday’s St. Patrick’s Day parade.
We always said rain or
shine and we certainly had
rain. And a big “thank you” to
the hardy souls who stood in
the rain to cheer us on.
Finally, we are resuming
our monthly meetings.
We will be kicking off our
fi rst meeting of the spring on
Wednesday, March 27 with a
reception at the usual meeting
start time of 7:30 p.m. We’ll
be serving sliders, salads and
munchies, along with other
refreshments. We will start
the actual meeting at 8 p.m.
Our guest speaker will be our
new 45th Precinct commander
Captain Thomas Fraser.
As usual our meeting
will be held at the Villa Maria
Academy lunchroom, located
at 3335 Country Club
Road. The association can be
reached via mail at P.O. Box
211, Bronx, N.Y. 10465, and via
telephone at (718) 823-1814. Follow

Allerton is currently inundated
with construction. Most
of it we are very much appreciative
of. But it does come at
a cost and inconvenience. For
two years now Holland Avenue
has been a construction
sight taking away desperately
needed parking. Homeowners
and their guest no longer have
parking and the customers
for local businesses have no
where to park.
This creates stress in the
community and with the completion
not yet in sight we need
the city to fi nd common sense.
If you take away parking from
the community there will be
an effect on customer traffi c.
We have new businesses
along Holland Avenue that
have not seen their full potential
because they were born
into a construction sight with
limited parking. We need relief
to keep these businesses
alive, whether it’s a grant or
a secured loan the small business
can repay slowly to recover
from the loss during
construction.
Unfortunately, these hopes
may never come into fruition.
So I urge every single
resident reading this paper to
fi nd a few dollars and support
local businesses. Especially
our Allerton businesses near
and around Holland Avenue.
Hopefully we can offset the
loss they are experiencing.
We need to keep small businesses
alive. Our new party
store and empanada business
established during this construction.
We need to support
them so that they can thrive
and stay in Allerton.
Fancy Fashion and Geneva
Fashion need our support. Allerton
Flowers has some of the
best fl owers in NYC. Isis Restaurant
has the best Mexican
food in town. Roma Pizza has
the best pizza in town. Mama’s
and Daughters African Hair
braiding is one of the best in
town. Prisca Nail Salon is another
great location. We have
all these amazing businesses
that need your help.
Yin Hua Discount has supported
this community for
many years. It’s time for us
to support them, especially
around Holland Avenue.
There’s no reason to fear shopping
on Allerton. The safest
and best way to support and
improve your home is by investing
and patronizing your
local businesses. Then they
can reinvest and improve
their businesses.
The time is now. The pan
handlers will be out. It may
be a minor inconvenience
but they will not hurt you if
you say no. We know this is
the concern of many who answered
our survey why they
do not shop on Allerton. We
are working on this issue diligently.
Any suggestions you have
to improve Allerton are always
welcomed. Join our Facebook
page Allerton International
Merchants Association
Inc.
We also encourage your
to shop at local gems that are
nearby. The new and improved
Royal Coach has been under
new management for some
time now and the food and the
service have continually gotten
better. It’s always clean the
staff is always friendly and the
food is amazing. It’s not your
typical diner food. You have to
experience it for yourself.
If you haven’t been to Royal
Coach in several year you will
not regret visiting. And when
you do, tell us how much you
enjoyed it. The best part is it’s
right in our backyard., walking
distance for many of our
residents.
And for those who enjoy a
good beer, a few blocks away
from the Royal Coach is the
Gun Hill Brewery. They just
celebrated their anniversary
and we congratulate them as
well with their continued success.
Allerton has a lot to offer
and has become a better place
to raise a family. We are fi ghting
for the working class everyday
and do whatever we
can to make it more comfortable
for you but we need your
help. Shop Allerton. Shop in
our surrounding businesses.
Keep the money in our community
as much as possible
and we can win this fi ght.
Don’t give up. If there is a
question or concern regarding
a local establishment don’t
hesitate to bring it to our attention.
Finally, we want to thank
our local police offi cers. They
did a great job this past weekend
bringing order to our corridor.
It was a beautiful warm
day and the avenue was vibrant
and fi lled with life. The
panhandlers were out as well
as street vendors crowding
the sidewalk. They compassionately
and professionally
corrected these conditions.
Harassment of any kind
will not be tolerated in Allerton.
Cat calling, pan handling,
and hawking are things
we don’t accept here. Possibly
other neighborhoods will allow
it but not here. So if you
experience any of these conditions
let us know. Don’t be
discouraged, we are working
hard to eliminate it in our
community. We are ready for
the warm weather. With your
help this will be the best year
yet.
Don’t forget to join us for
our upcoming Anniversary
party. Tickets are only $75 and
the money raised also goes towards
improving the community.
It’s all at the beautiful
Sanz Banquet Hall 815 Allerton.
