BRONX TIMES REPORTER, M BTR AY 22-28, 2015 81
The St. Raymond High
School for Boys Varsity Basketball
Team, also known
as the Ravens, reached new
heights this past season. With
a 14-game winning streak, longest
in recent memory, they
ranked number one in NYC
for four weeks by the New
York Sports Writers Association.
They also had their fi rst
twenty win season in seven
years with a 20-7 overall record.
The Ravens fi nished the
season in solid fashion as they
were named Archdiocesan of
NY “AA” Division Co-Champions.
The Varsity team stepped
into the playoff quarterfi nals
with a ton of energy, high
moral and a drive to go all
the way. After a hard fought
game during the fi rst round,
the Ravens lost to Christ the
King 71-55. Though the season
came to an abrupt ending, the
team, who is only losing three
seniors this year, already has
its sights set on next year and
remaining a dominate force in
the CHSAA “AA”.
As many accomplishments
that were made on the court,
just as many were made off
the court for this team. Jorge
Lopez, head varsity basketball
coach at St. Raymond, achieved
a lifetime coaching milestone
by winning his 100th game on
January 8 versus The Knox
School with a score of 84-73.
Coach Lopez was also named
the CHSAA “AA” Coach of the
Year and selected head coach
of the 2019 NYC Mayor’s Cup.
Coach Lopez has been at the
helm of the varsity basketball
program since 2012. Since taking
over the program, he has
led St. Raymond to four Archdiocesan
Championship appearances
winning in 2013.
Prior to becoming head
varsity basketball coach, Lopez
was head coach of the Varsity
B team from 2001-2003,
leading them to a New York
City Championship in 2003.
He also served as the head
coach of the Freshman Basketball
team from 2003-2012,
compiling a record of 152-62
and leading his team to two
title appearances in 2004 and
2005. From 2005 to 2012, Lopez
was also working as the associate
head basketball coach
under Coach Oliver Antigua.
In 2007, he helped the varsity
basketball team reach the
CHSAA “AA” New York City
Title before falling to Christ
the King. In 2012, Coach Lopez
helped the varsity team win
their eighth Archdiocesan
Championship as well as St.
Raymond’s seventh New York
City CHSAA “AA” title.
Many St. Raymond student
athletes also reached
new milestones in their careers,
including senior, Jalen
Reneau, who was selected to
the 2019 CHSAA NYC Mayor’s
Cup team, junior Gary Grant
who was named to the CHSAA
“AA” First Team All-League
and junior Louis Kortright
who was also named to the
CHSAA “AA” Third Team All-
League.
Coach Lopez exemplifi ed
true leadership as he led the
Ravens towards their successes
this season. “It is not
always about the Championship,
it’s about the journey-
Trust the Process!”, stated
head coach Jorge Lopez.
St. Raymond’s Varsity Basketball Season Highs &
Head Coach Named CHSAA Coach of the Year
St. Raymond High School
for Boys is proud to announce
that the Class of 2019 is already
making waves on the
college front and standing out
as a class.
In March, senior Brandon
Santiago was awarded the
NROTC Marine Corps Scholarship
worth $180,000. This
scholarship is one of the highest
scholarship awards granted
by the Marines NROTC program.
Brandon, current student
body president and track
athlete, has worked hard over
the last three years to get
where he is today. During his
sophomore year Brandon entered
a Marine Corps Recruiting
station for the fi rst time
and it has only been up since
then. He has truly focused and
invested his time preparing
mentally, physically and academically
for his college life
and career with the US Marines.
Last summer he was
also accepted into the very
prestigious and competitive
Marine Corps Summer Leadership
and Character Development
Academy. Brandon plans
to attend either George Washington
University or Catholic
University in Washington,
D.C. this fall which will allow
him to continue on his path to
becoming a Marine.
“I’ve always been fueled by
those who surrounded me. I
have been blessed to have the
best support group whether it
be my family, the poolees, my
teachers, or the Marine Recruiters.
I’m glad that all of it
paid off in the end and I will be
able to become a leader in the
fi ercest fi ghting force on the
face of the earth - The United
States Marine Corps. This is
just a small stepping stone on
my long journey. Can’t wait
to be a Marine. Semper Fi”,
Santiago stated after being
awarded the NROTC Scholarship.
Brandon isn’t the only St.
Raymond senior making a
name for himself amongst the
top ranking students of the
Class of 2019. Ryan Jaquez received
a full four-year scholarship
to Brown University
and plans on studying Political
Science. Jason Williams,
member of the varsity baseball
team, has received full
four-year scholarships to
both Manhattan College and
Fairfi eld University. Abraham
Castillo, who is slated
to be named Valedictorian,
also received a full four-year
scholarship to Fairfi eld University.
But it is Justin Hayes, varsity
basketball team member,
who has topped the charts!
Hayes has received $1Million,
to date, in academic
scholarships from over 30
colleges and universities - acceptances
ranging from state,
private, and public schools.
Though he is currently undecided
on where he wants to
attend, Justin plans on studying
sports management, physical
therapy and criminal justice.
“I want to be a physical
therapist. I like to help people
stay fi t and stay healthy. As a
minor, I want to do criminal
justice or forensic science. I
like solving problems and getting
around obstacles,” Hayes
stated about his future studies.
The entire St. Raymond
High School for Boys community
is extremely proud of the
Class of 2019 for their accomplishments
so far. The school
is excited to hear about more
big milestones as college acceptances
and scholarship
packages continue to roll in.
