There are over 2.1 million small businesses
in New York. Small businesses
contribute robustly to the economy
through collection of taxes and by employing
approximately 4 million people.
Since the arrival of retail chains and
online shopping, small businesses have
shut their doors after years of providing
services to their local communities.
Furthermore, it has become harder
for startups to survive – approximately
50% of small business and 80% of restaurants
never make it past year fi ve.
The local small business industry has
changed and Small Businesses are in
danger. Owners are struggling to keep
their dream and livelihood alive. Now
more than ever, small businesses need
support from City Council to keep their
doors open.
Thus, last week I requested Comptroller
Scott Stringer to conduct a survey
report outlining the costs associated
with operating a business in New
York. Such a report would cover the
comprehensive set of fi scal obligations
faced by startups and established businesses.
This type of survey could serve
as a ‘business-friendliness’ index and
ultimately help inform policymakers,
like myself, on potential measures to
improve New York’s small business
environment. It is absolutely vital for
small businesses to thrive and receive
the support that they deserve after multiple
contributions to the economy and
their community.
Each and every small business deserves
recognition for their hard work
ethic. For example, the small business
owners of Havana Café, Bistro SK, G &
R Deli, Villa Barone, and Bronx Times
all had unique visions that they wanted
to bring into their community. Their
dedication and creativity have positively
impacted the communities in
which their small businesses operate.
However, it comes at a cost – fi nancial
risk, long work hours, inconsistency,
and a learning curve. Hence, it is
an environment that generates and instills
tenacity and perseverance.
As the chairman of Committee on
Small Business, I strive to protect and
enhance small businesses across the
fi ve boroughs. Small Businesses contribute
the most to the NYC Business
LET US HEAR FROM YOU
Ecosystem. In fact, they comprise over
95% of the city’s workforce. As such, it
is vital for small businesses to succeed
and thrive, as they are the backbone of
NYC.
