We ended our year, full of
good cheer at The Redwood
Club on Schurz Avenue this
past Wednesday, December 12.
A special “thank you” to The
Redwood Club for allowing
us to have our holiday party
there and to CABO on East
Tremont Avenue for catering
the tasty food. Thanks to all
that attended and helped out
that night, as well.
Our holiday lights are up
and shining brightly. Thank
you to all of the members who
donated and helped make this
possible. We will be coming
around to all the participating
businesses with posters to display
proudly in your stores/
offi ces. If you are a Throggs
Neck Merchants Association
member and have not made
your donation towards the
lights, please go to our website

BY GEORGE HAVRANEK
Previously published articles
from concerned and
dedicated civic association
leaders in this fi ne periodical
indicates that ‘Authoritative
Bodies’ of our municipal government
hear but choose to
ignore the impassioned cries
from their respective communities.
Despite staunch
community oppositions from
residents and elected local offi
cials the controversial ‘road
diet’ will be forced upon our
neighbors in the Morris Park
community. Road diet is another
catchy term that downplays
negative perceptions.
This strategy of illusory perception
is commonplace in the
advertising world. For example,
the recently adopted descriptive,
pre-owned vehicle
is far more palatable to the
senses than the former label of
‘used car’. Whether you spin,
or shake up the words, in this
circumstance road diet is another
term for traffi c bottleneck
and a pre-owned vehicle
will always be a used car.
The Pelham Bay neighborhood
has been fraught with
over-development. In October,
permits were fi led to demolish
a three-story structure
at 1820 Edison Avenue.
As reported in New York
YIMBY, this dwelling is to
be replaced with a 60-foot tall
structure designed to house
ten apartments. In addition,
Community Board 11 is confronting
potential rezoning
near Westchester Square.
Plans to construct a ninefl
oor mixed use complex at
1340 Blondell Avenue are catalytic
to this rezoning. This
rezoning will potentially result
in a transformation that
goes beyond the scope of many
neighborhood residents. Being
of the fringe of Community
Board 10, the rezoning plans
should spark the interests of
multiple communities. A hearing
is scheduled for Thursday,
December 20 at 7 p.m., Jacobi
Medical Center, 1400 Pelham
Parkway South, Building 4,
Nurses Residence, 2nd Floor
Conference Center.
Reports, by passionate
community activist Annie
Boller, indicate the NYC Department
of Community Planning
is meeting with elected
offi cials to open dialogue on
this overwhelming issue.
We all hope that the choir of
community voices can pierce
the deaf ear of authority. To
paraphrase the late comedian
George Burns, “Too bad
the people that know what’s
best for their community are
busy driving cabs and cutting
hair.” Simply stated, at times,
the hard working class members
of the community, not
the wealthy infl uential power
brokers, know what is best for
their communities.
Over-development and infrastructure
issues within the
Spencer Estate footprint pale
in comparison with those in
many nearby communities;
however, we strongly support
our neighbors in their quests
to overcome radical injustices.
From all of us at the Spencer
Estate Civic Association:
We wish everyone a Merry
Christmas and a joyous Holiday
Season.
Details for our next meeting
will be announced shortly.

Civic Association e-mail with

Brings Solutions”.
