College Art Gallery’s fascinating,
eye-popping Castles in the Sky:
Fantasy Architecture in Contemporary
Art exhibit will be open from
Wednesday, January 2, 2019 to Saturday,
January 26, 2019, when the exhibition
closes. The Art Gallery, which
is located on the Lehman campus, 250
Bedford Park Boulevard West, is open
Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10 a.m. to
4 p.m. The gallery is open to the public
and admission is free.
Featuring a mix of 30 artists—
well-known names and upstarts, some
Bronx-based—Castles in the Sky is an
entertaining and provocative survey
of how artists match their limitless
imaginations with the presence and
purpose(s) of place. Each work in the
exhibit “appeals to the dream that we
all have about the perfect home, or the
perfect building, or the perfect place
we would want to spend time,” said
Bartholomew F. Bland, executive director
of the Art Gallery and curator
of the exhibit.
The catalog for Castles in the Sky:

The Bronx Council on the Arts
presents Foreign/Familiar: Immigrants
in the Bronx from Wednesday,
January 9, to Wednesday, February 27,
2019 at the Longwood Art Gallery @
Hostos, 450 Grand Concourse at 149th
Street, Room C-190.
Curated collectively by Bronx Council
on the Arts staff, the exhibition was
generated through an open call for
Bronx-based artists, and offers alternative
narratives to the current public
discourses on immigrant and refugee
communities. Seven Bronx visual and
media artists explore displacement
and belonging through works infl uenced,
inspired, created, or responding
to issues of voluntary and involuntary
exile, immigration, diaspora
and statelessness. The exhibition’s title
refl ects on the usage of the terms
‘foreign/foreigner,’ as an ever expanding
tool used to exclude vast sections
of the population from the national
imaginary. At a time when marginalized
communities are openly vilifi ed
in public conversations, these artists
articulate alternative individual notions
of movement through personal
and nuanced strategies.
The works in this exhibition span
across and weave through overlapping
historical eras and locations, including
exploring the legacies and intersections
of the transatlantic slave
trade with current migrations of African
descendent peoples in the Bronx,
memories of landscape and domestic
spaces left behind, and questioning inclusion
and nationalism through prose
and performance.
Participating artists include: Dennis
Redmoon Darkeem, Nicky Enright,
Kitchen Table Digital Diaspora Collective,
Tijay Mohammed Luis Stephenberg,
and Musah Swallah.
