Feeling the burn?
Feeling the Burn?You’ve
probably felt it. After a meal,
a burning sensation rises
through your chest or up to
your throat. This feeling can
come from refl ux: when acid
and food rise up from the
stomach into the esophagus,
the tube that connects your
stomach to your throat.
Occasional refl ux is normal.
Most people may not even
feel it. Sometimes it’s mild,
with occasional heartburn
after large meals. Refl ux can
also cause coughing, wheezing
or problems swallowing.
But refl ux two or more
times a week for a few weeks
may be gastrointestinal refl
ux disease (GERD). GERD affects
around 20% of people in
the U.S. at some point in their
lives.
GERD usually isn’t dangerous.
But it can cause discomfort,
pain, and fear of eating.
Fortunately, there are many
options for treating refl ux and
GERD. Some lifestyle choices
may simply prevent it.
Medications can also help
many people with GERD. They
work in different ways, and
you may need a combination
to control your symptoms.
Doctors often fi rst recommend
antacids to relieve
heartburn and other mild
symptoms. Drugs called H2
blockers may provide relief if
an antacid alone isn’t enough.
These can stop your stomach
from making acid in the short-
term.
A type of drug called proton
pump inhibitors (PPIs) may be
recommended if other drugs
don’t help control your refl ux.
PPIs reduce the amount of acid
the stomach makes. They’re
very effective. But people who
take PPIs for a long time or in
high doses may be more likely
to have side effects.
Here are some ways to reduce
refl ux
• Maintain a healthy
weight. Even a bit of weight
loss can help.
• Avoid your personal trigger
foods. Some people have
foods that make their refl ux
worse. These can include
acidic foods, chocolate, or alcohol.
• Don’t smoke. Smoking
can cause more acid to enter
the esophagus.
• Manage stress. Stress and
anxiety can make refl ux feel
worse.
• Stay upright. Don’t
lie down for 2 or 3 hours after
a meal.
• Raise the head of your
bed. If you have refl ux at night,
raise the head of your bed by 6
to 8 inches.
Talk to your doctor if you
have refl ux twice or more per
week.

The Spencer Estate community
has been the benefi -
ciary of support from a multitude
of sources. During this
holiday season we take time to
refl ect upon our good fortunes
and extend sincere thanks to
those that make it possible:
Our deep gratitude goes
out to Assemblyman Michael
Benedetto, Councilman Mark
Gjonaj, attorney Ted Prior
and staffs for their unwavering
support. A big shout out to
Matt Cruz, and the entire staff
at Community Board 10 for being
the conduit of information
and vigilant eyes of our community.
A special thanks to
the Bronx Times Reporter and
Laura Guerriero for providing
us with the forum needed to
voice our news, opinions, and
concerns. We send heartfelt
thanks to Senator Jeff Klein
and Congressman Joe Crowley
for many years of meritorious
service. Our community
will miss their forthright dedication.
Community footnote: On
Wednesday, December 19,
our annual Christmas affair
took place at the Knights of
Columbus. Business was conducted
prior to indulging on
the 5-star cuisine provided by
Pat, Phil, and Frank of International
Caterers. We thank
the trio for their continued
displays of community support.
Pat Caruso from CB 10
and Ted Prior addressed the
membership. Caruso skillfully
explained the dynamics
of various programs, such
as STAR, SNAP, and HEAP,
which can benefi t many community
residents. Ted Prior,
a valued friend of our association
and lead counsel for
Councilman Gjonaj, pledged
future support for our community
and invited all members
to the councilman’s Saturday,
December 22 Christmas gala.
John Korres, representing Assemblyman
Benedetto’s offi ce,
circulated among the crowd
and reinforced the assemblyman’s
open door policy.
All of the aforementioned
are integral to the maintenance
of our neighborhood’s
quality of life; however, we
cannot become complacent.
A sense of perpetual security
for our wonderful neighborhood
is an egregious oversight.
As seen in neighboring
areas, over-developments and
unwanted changes occur at
rapid paces. Future attempts
to change the characteristics
of our neighborhood are eminent.
Wherever opportunities
appear investors scurry to exploit
the situations. Resident
involvement is quintessential
to the system of checks and
balances that strengthen and
unite a community. The New
Year, 2019, marks the centennial
anniversary of organized
civic activity in the Spencer
Estate community.
In the upcoming year,
membership drives will be
conducted in honor of the dedicated
men and woman that
fostered 100 years of neighborhood
civic activity.
Details of our next meeting
date and subsequent membership
drives will be announced
shortly.
On behalf of president Al
Carrena and the entire association
we wish everyone a
Happy and Healthy New Year.

Estate to gghh55@aol.com.
Remember, “Inclusion
brings Solutions”
Wishing all our Legion
Family a safe and happy holiday
season. The post will be
hosting a blood drive in the
name of Jason, son of Greg and
Irene, dear friends and members
of our post. Jason was
taken from us at the young
age of 20 due to a sudden illness,
his loss has left a hole in
the hearts of all that knew and
loved him.
The blood drive is being
conducted by the America
Red Cross on Thursday, January
3 from 1 to 6 p.m. at 1531
Ericson Place.We are asking
all that can, please come and
donate to a worthy cause, the
demand for blood has come to
a crisis point. It is something
that can bring life to someone,
maybe yourself or someone
you know. In advance I thank
all that can donate on behalf of
Greg, Irene and Jason. We are
stronger as one, let’s work together.
God bless America.
