Zealand are the other qualifiers for
next year’s Twenty20 World Cup from
Oct. 18 to Nov. 15.
At the end of the cutoff period
which was Dec. 31, 2018, the West
Indies team held on to the seventh
spot and with the first eight teams
going straight to the World Cup, they
avoided a playoff situation.
Earlier in 2018 West Indies had
to face a qualification tournament
in order to get into the ICC 2019 50
Overs World Cup in England.
Now the two major cricketing
nations facing that situation are Sri
Lanka and Bangladesh.
The Sri Lankans are in ninth,
while Bangladesh which recently lost
its three-match series 1-2 to West
Indies, is 10th on the ranking table.
Minnows Afghanistan, coached by
Trinidad and Tobago’s Phil Simmons,
a former West Indies coach also qualified
directly of its eight-place rating.
Six teams from the ICC Twenty20
World Cup Qualifier this year will
join Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the
group stage, with four qualifying to
the Super 12 stage.
Cricket and to Charity.
The BEM was established in 1922
to replace the Medal of the Order of
the British Empire (OBE).
The 69-year-old former cricketer
from Guyana played from 1972 to
1981 as a left-handed batsman and
right-arm off spinner.
The former batsman was part of
the 1975 and 1979 teams that won
the Cricket World Cup. His highest
score is 187 against India in the
1978-79 tour.
He took over the captaincy of the
West Indies team from 1977-1978 following
the resignation of Clive Lloyd,
three years prior to his last Test
Match and ODI appearances in 1981.
Ironically, Braithwaite has had a
tough time in the recent IPL. He
played only four matches last season
for Sunrisers Hyderabad and in 2017,
managed only two matches for Delhi
Daredevil.
He is best remembered for his
exploits during the 2016 Twenty20
World Cup when he smashed sixes of
the first four balls of the final over
against England, to win West Indies
second title.
The IPL bowls off on March 29
until May 19.
