Trinidad cops move against
opposition big wigs

In the past week, police in
Trinidad arrested and charged
two former high ranking officials
of the previous United
National Congress (UNC) government
for their alleged role
in overpaying close friends
and associates hundreds of
millions in legal fees and then
splitting up the excess among
themselves.
Former Attorney General
Anand Ramlogan and
former Senator Gerald Ramdeen
appeared in a Port of
Spain court on Monday on
charges related to fraud and
misconduct in public office in
what authorities claim was a
major money laundering and
self enrichment scheme that
was the modus operandi of
officials of the UNC government
during its last term that
ended in the fall of 2015. They
both pleaded not guilty and
are to return to court late next
month for a second hearing.
Government has said that
the charges came at the end
of three years of highly secret
investigation into the workings
of the AG’s office and other
government departments but
the main opposition party has
already begun flouting theories
that the charges are being
timed to damage it and its
leading candidates ahead of
general elections next year.
