“We wanted to give the
community an opportunity
to ask questions not just
about the rent regulation
fight, which I care very
deeply about, but about
any other issues people
felt need to be addressed,”
Myrie, who represents the
20th Senatorial District,
told Caribbean Life afterwards.
Myrie, a Costa Rican
American, whose grandmother
hails from Jamaica,
said the panel that he
assembled included Housing
Justice For All; Community
Service Society;
New York City Housing
Authority; New York City’s
Department of Housing
Preservation and Development,
Department of
Buildings, and Department
of Finance; the State
Attorney General’s office;
Brooklyn Legal Services;
and NHS Brooklyn.
Additionally, there were
resource tables set up by
NYC’s Public Engagement
Tenant Support Unit, NYS
Division of Human Rights,
CAMBA, IMPACCT Brooklyn
and Empire State Indivisible.
“We were proud to bring
many of the agencies and
groups who work on housing
issues assembled in the
same place,” Myrie said.

Resource Fair, featuring
dozens of colleges
and representatives from
across New York and
other states.
The senator’s College
Resource Fair will
be held in partnership
with the Department of
Education, Senator Julia
Salazar, Assemblymember
Charles Barron and
the Cypress Hills Development
Corporation.
The event takes place,
at the Thomas Jefferson
Educational Campus,
400 Pennsylvania Ave.,
Brooklyn, from on May
18 from 12:00 noon to
3:00 p.m.
Persaud, who represents
the 19th Senatorial
District, said there
will be free giveaways for
guests, dozens of colleges
and representatives in
attendance, and a presentation
by Maisha Challenger,
Federal Student
Aid Specialist from the
Department of Education.
“Families and students
will be able to discover
educational opportunities
and meet with
admissions personnel, as
well as learn more about
the FAFSA form, scholarships
and other financial
aid,” the Guyaneseborn
Persaud said.
“It’s important that
are kids are coming out
to learn what college
is all about and what
opportunities are out
there,” she added. “Getting
a college education
is valuable and indispensable.
However, it is not
for everyone, and we will
have job resources and
other services available
as well.”
Persaud said the annual
Senate District 19 College
Resource Fair aims
to guide “our students
in finding the right path
for their futures and help
unlock their potentials,”
stating that it is “always
open to everyone.”
