Legendary former West Indies fast
bowler, Michael Holding has urged Cricket
West Indies (CWI) not to discard outstanding
former teammate, Desmond
Haynes, but to absorb him into the coaching
setup of the men’s team.
Haynes, a member of the legendary
West Indies sides of the 1970s, 80s and
early 90s, missed out on becoming head
coach of the regional side recently after
CWI appointed his former opening partner,
Phil Simmons.
However, Holding contended that Haynes
still had a valuable role to play and
said both CWI and Simmons needed to
utilize his skills to enhance the struggling
Caribbean side’s development.
“I would hope that a lot of other people
that applied for the job that they are qualified
in some respect, especially those that
made the shortlist,” Holding told the Line
& Length cricket program.
Haynes and Simmons were part of a

final three-man shortlist, which included
Floyd Reifer who served as interim coach
once the Rickey Skerritt-led administration
dispensed with the services with controversial
Englishman Richard Pybus.
Holding, now a leading television commentator,
praised the move to appoint
Simmons to the post again, especially
considering his previous success.

CWI Director of Cricket, Jimmy
Adams, said the tournament would be
an important one as selectors begin
to assess players ahead of the next
50-overs World Cup.
He said “it will allow us to start
identifying players who will go on
to play a role in our qualifications.
Though some of our international
players will be touring India with the
West Indies during the competition, it
allows more opportunities and exposure
for our young players.”
One again this year, CWI has included
a development squad in the Nov. 6
to Dec. 1 tournament, with the hope of
exposing younger players who missed
out on selection to the six regional
franchises.
Labeled the West Indies Emerging
Players, Adams said competing in
the Super50 would also build on the
work done in the High Performance
Program.
A total of 40 group stage matches
will be played, with the two groups
running concurrently.
Marooners will raise the curtain on
the tournament when they clash with
Hurricanes on Nov. 6 at Warner Park,
St. Kitts, while Group B will get underway
when Jaguars take on Emerging

Trinidad the following day.
