Cumbe: Center for African and Diaspora
Dance is excited to share for the second
time this month, in this season of giving,
the Cumbe Kwanzaa Marketplace. Cumbe
is offering the community of Brooklyn a
space to not only dance, but to also support
the rich culture and creativity of the
Diaspora in the form of a marketplace.
While vendors will share their wares,
toys, elixirs and art, patrons will indulge
in a mosaic of activities including dance
demonstrations, arts and crafts, gift-making
workshops, massages as well as live
music. And be sure to stay for an immersive
Kwanzaa learning experience created
by artist Iris Wilson. This experience will
include a dance demo, a discussion about
Kwanzaa and some fun interactive activities
.Vendors include Brooklyn Tea, which is
celebrating its first full year in Bed Stuy,
artist Monifa Kincaid, Mil Mundos Books,
a community bilingual bookstore, and
many more artisans offering handmade
jewelry, food, spiritual services and more.
“We are hoping to provide space for
local creators to share their goods and
talents and thrive,” said Senior Program
Director, Kendra J. Ross. “We want our
community to learn more about Kwanzaa
and to encourage their participation by
offering a place for people to acquire gifts
for the Holidays and beyond. Since Bed-
Stuy is historically a community of rich
black culture, history, and commerce,
Cumbe wants to contribute to that legacy
with a dynamic marketplace.”
“Cumbe is a place for the community
to learn, grow and share. Through events
and gatherings like the Kwanzaa Marketplace,
we hope to unify Bed Stuy and the
larger Brooklyn community as we celebrate
the beauty, diversity and influence
of Africa and its diaspora in our lives,”
said Ross
The Cumbe Kwanzaa Marketplace will
take place at 1368 Fulton St., within the
Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Plaza on
Sunday – Dec. 22 from 3:00-6:00 pm.
Light refreshments will be served.
