Cutting loose as a break-dancer
in front of a civilian audience
might seem an unlikely way for
a New York City cop to spend a Saturday
evening. But that’s exactly what a crew of
local offi cers did at the NYPD’s fi rst ever
Breakdance Showcase, co-sponsored by
LeFrak City Maintenance Services and
held at the Lost Battalion Hall Recreation
Center in Rego Park.
Th ere were some pros on hand to give
an exhibition, loosen up the crowd and
give pointers at the February event, followed
by scores of offi cers and local kids
who hit the fl oor to show off their best
moves, as an offi cer in an NYPD windbreaker
manned the DJ table.
The event was an extension of the
NYPD’s new neighborhood policing initiative,
which aims to build stronger ties
between offi cers and community residents.
Coming together over breakdancing
is a way for offi cers to connect with
the people they patrol on a human level,
Assistant Chief Juanita Holmes, the commanding
offi cer of the Patrol Borough
Queens North, told NY1.
“We’re doing things diff erently,” said
Assistant Chief Holmes. “Breakdancing,
competing with the children, talking to
the community, building relationships —
it’s all police work.”
State Senator Jose Peralta lent his support,
attending the event and even busting
a move or two. Th e event was “about
breaking the mentality of us against
them,” said Sen. Peralta, who co-sponsored.
Randi Koch Nir, the director of residential
lease enforcement for LeFrak
City, agreed, calling it “a good way for the
community to have some fun with the
police offi cers instead of having them respond
because something bad happened.
“It’s good to see the other side, and
to see that cops are just like us, and that
they’re approachable and like to have
fun, not everything you see on TV that’s
bad in this world.”
Assistant Chief Holmes said the
NYPD expects to hold more such events
in the future.
