Senator Peralta hosts ninth annual backpack giveaway
»BY RYAN KELLEY
Thousands of local children
went back to school this fall
with a new backpack thanks
to the efforts of Senator Jose Peralta
and several community organizations.
In his ninth annual backpack
giveaway at the intersection of 98th
Place and 57th Avenue in Corona,
Peralta was joined by volunteers in
giving away 3,000 backpacks fi lled
with school supplies to local youth.
Peralta, who has helped distribute
some 20,000 backpacks with supplies
over the past nine years, said that the
tradition is his way of “making sure
our kids are ready to succeed.”
“Education is fundamental for
a child’s future, and providing the
appropriate learning tools is vital
to ensure schoolchildren are confident
to face the new academic year,”
Peralta said. “Unfortunately, many
hard-working families struggle to
make ends meet and cannot afford
to buy the basic school supplies for
their children. With initiatives like
this, we try to provide local students
with the school necessities
they need and deserve.”
Each student who received a
backpack on a first-come, firstserved
basis saw it filled with notebooks,
pencil kits, crayons and
more. Contributing partners of the
event included LeFrak City, United
Airlines, Mark Medical Care, Con
Edison, Queens Library, LaGuardia
Gateway Partners, Delta Air
Lines, Local 338, Queens Center
Mall, Apicha Community Health
Center, Affinity Health Plan, White
Castle, Variety Boys and Girls Club
of Queens, The Learning Multicultural
School and more.
In fact, the Queens Center Mall
was responsible for donating 500
of the backpacks given out at the
event.
“These public/private partnerships
are a perfect way to make life
better for those in need in our community,”
said John Scaturro, senior
manager of marketing. “Assisting
families with their back-to-school
needs takes some of the pressure off
the season for parents and it gives
children a head start on their academic
success.”
