FROM THE PUBLISHER
With the start of the new year, we say good riddance to the many struggles faced in 2020 and
welcome to the fresh start that lies before us.
Of course, the hard lessons we learned are not forgotten. Chief among those lessons is to be more
appreciative for the selfless efforts of doctors, nurses, and other medics on the front lines of the
coronavirus pandemic. That is why we celebrate these healthcare heroes on this month’s cover
as People of The Year.
Despite the relief of 2020 being behind us, mental health remains a top-of-mind priority. In Press
Health, reporter Sheryl Nance-Nash explores coping mechanisms to deal with pandemic-induced
stress. And in Press Family & Education, Digital Editor Briana Bonfiglio digs into how students
struggling with remote learning can do the same.
We also look forward to how Long Island’s innovators in the technology industry will continue
to help us do our best work despite the challenges of telecommuting and social distancing. Our
special section dedicated to the 20 Top Techies, in partnership with LISTnet, gives a nod to these
professionals who’ve also been working overtime.
In Press Home, real estate reporters Tammy Scileppi and Arlene Gross unpack new interior
design trends for 2021 and how to set up a warm outdoor entertaining area to host socially distant
guests during winter.
And in Press Buzz, our reporters explore the many local historic presidential points of interest to visit in the run-up to Inauguration
Day and Associate Editor Annie Wilkinson recalls the LI ties of Geraldine Ferraro, the first female vice presidential candidate on a
major party line.
