North Shore Towers Courier n November 2016 49 Winning Formula Men’s Closing Dinner proves golf is on an upswing at NST by Stephen Vratos “It’s community service, but it’s for something I love,” NST Country Club Men’s Golf President Stan Yoel said following the closing dinner on Thursday, September 30. “I try to do the best for everyone.” More than 100 members gathered for the annual endof season celebration at Towers on the Green, where the 2016 tournament champions were officially presented their awards amid a convivial atmosphere of camaraderie, food and refreshment. Yoel presided over the event, capping a successful first year helming the position. “Membership was up significantly.” he said. “NST golf is blossoming!” This success for the “sport of kings” at North Shore Towers belies a general downturn in popularity across the nation in recent years and Yoel has some ideas as to why. He cites the course’s convenient location and value. “Pricing is more than reasonable; it’s quite a value,” he noted. Moreover, the condition and upkeep of the course is exemplary, due in no small part to the efforts of Superintendent of Grounds, Eric O’Neill, and his crew. “He does a spectacular job.” Yoel was also quick to point out the importance of the Board in supporting O’Neill with materials and equipment when needed. The Country Club is currently in the process of renovating the holes, updating and tweaking the course in such a way as to make it fresh for future play. Some “easy” holes of the past will become more challenging, while others will become less so, all in keeping with the Club’s high standards and so as to prevent the course from becoming stale. But perhaps the most significant reason for the upswing in golf at North Shore Towers is the way the Country Club treats its Freshmen. “New members are made to feel at home,” Yoel explained. “We do our best to make them comfortable the first day, getting them involved in tournament play and social events on and off the course.” What’s more, according to an October 6 article on CNN.com, studies conducted by Scotland’s University of Edinburgh suggest that golf can help cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic health. “Exposure to fresh air and sun helps boost Vitamin-D levels, while the act of swinging a club can improve muscle endurance and balance, particularly in old age,” reported Dr. Andrew Murray. “And the benefits aren’t just physical. Golf can help reduce the risk of anxiety, depression and dementia, improving an individual’s ‘wellness, self-esteem, and self-worth.’” Add to those findings, the Country Club’s attention to establishing and nursing inclusion and esprit de corps, and it’s no wonder golf is thriving at North Shore Towers. “We have a good formula for making people happy,” Yoel confided. “There’s something for everyone at any level.” Men’s Golf President, Stan Yoel Photos by Stephen Vrattos (l. to r.)
