Prospect Park Parade Ground
debuts ‘adult-recreation area’
BY COLIN MIXSON
City Parks honchos and elected
offi cials celebrated the grand
opening of a so-called “adultrecreation
area” at Prospect
Park Parade Ground on May 3.
The new amenity, which provides
a suite of alfresco fi tness
gadgets to the southernmost
reach of Brooklyn’s Backyard,
does not feature a bar, cocktail
hour, or professional dancers,
and a spokeswoman for the Prospect
Park Alliance confi rmed the
city will not be checking IDs.
“There won’t be anyone
standing there,” said Prospect
Park Alliance spokeswoman
Lucy Gardner.
The $750,000 booze-free fun
zone includes a dozen varieties
of fi tness equipment, including
pull-up bars, peck decks, and
concrete step ups, along with
an open area for group workout
classes. Health nuts under
the age of 12, however, will not
be permitted to use the workout
gear, according to Gardner.
The offi cial grand opening of
the outdoor fi tness facility accompanies
the debut of a new
misting line — the fi rst in the
city — which are set on timers
to radiate brisk mists of water
vapor, cooling the faux grass of
nearby turf fi elds during the dog
days of summer.
Other add-ons include some
maintenance work to fi x drainage
problems at Baseball Field
7 and the reconstruction of a
volleyball court, in addition to
some landscaping work and new
seats.
The lion’s share of funding
for the project came by way of
Councilman Mathieu Eugene,
who hopes the facility will promote
good health amongst his
constituents.
“This section of Prospect
Park is so important for this
neighborhood,” said Eugene. “It
allows our residents to engage
in outdoor activities that are
benefi cial to the health and wellbeing
of the community.”
