While top players such as defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic and topranked female player Serena Williams succeeded in moving on, other star players such as Rafael Nadal and Venus Williams were ousted in upsets. Thousands again packed Arthur Ashe Stadium, complete with its new retractable roof, to enjoy the action. Among the more famous guests on hand were Beyonce and Jay-Z, Shaquille O’Neal, Alec Baldwin and Queens’ former Borough President Claire Shulman.
