COURTESY N.Y.P.L.
MANHATTAN SNAPS
The Jefferson Market Library, at Sixth Ave. and W. 10th St., was
built as a courthouse in 1876. The photo above shows a scene from
its courthouse days. By 1945, the building was vacant. In 1961,
the Committee for a Library in Jefferson Market Courthouse was
formed, leading to the building’s eventual renovation. Last year,
the library celebrated its 50th anniversary.
COURTESY N.Y.P.L.
In 1959, Village residents and preservationists rallied to save the
decommissioned Jefferson Market Courthouse from demolition.
The building’s renovation was then painstakingly planned over
four years. When it was originally built, the courthouse was hailed
as one of the five most beautiful buildings in America.
