Heroes of the Month
Borough President Adams recognized Dr. Robert Gore, an emergency room
doctor in East Flatbush dedicated to ending gang violence, as well as animal
activist Sean Casey and good Samaritan Jennifer Williams, who joined forces
to rescue a malnourished dog in Prospect Park, as “Heroes of the Month” for
January and February of 2016, respectively; the honorees were joined by their
families and friends in the rotunda of Brooklyn Borough Hall.
December 2015: MTA Stat ion Agent
Ralph Johnson
Johnson arrived early for his work shift at the Franklin Avenue 2/3/4/5/S train station
in Crown Heights on Labor Day, September 7th. He heard a scream, then noticed that
a woman had fallen onto the subway tracks. Johnson, 63 years old and a member
of Transport Workers Union Local 100, then jumped on the tracks and alerted a train
entering the station to stop. When the train stopped, Johnson worked with the assistance
of two police officers to return the woman to safety on the platform.

A native of Brooklyn, 39-year-old
Dr. Robert Gore knows the terrible
consequences of gang violence from
his experience as an emergency room
doctor at Kings County Hospital Center in
East Flatbush. He has dedicated himself
to offering teenagers an alternative
to violence. More than 100 teenagers
from Brooklyn are enrolled in the
Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI),
a mentoring program with workshops
on conflict resolution, peer mediation,
critical thinking, and fitness. KAVI
already has successful programs at the
High School for International Arts and
Business and the High School for Public
Service, with staff members who were
once themselves affiliated with gangs
and know from experience the risk
factors for violence.
February 2016:
Good Samarita ns
Sean Cas ey
and Jennifer
Williams
Jennifer Williams was walking her two
dogs in Prospect Park on the morning
on February 19th when her dog Daisy
noticed a motionless form near a tree.
Williams, a 43-year-old animal lover,
realized the form was actually a dog that
had been tied to the tree, and left alone
in the freezing cold. She unchained the
dog, wrapped it in her coat, and carried it
home. Williams then contacted 35-yearold
animal rescuer Sean Casey, operator
of the Sean Casey Animal Rescue in
Windsor Terrace, who retrieved the dog
(since named “Bindi” by his son) and h
as since been providing it with access
to medical treatment and a warm place
to stay.
