4 FEBRUARY 24 - MARCH 2, 2017 BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP LINDA SARSOUR TO LEAVE POST AT ARAB AMERICAN ASSOCIATION High-profile Bay Ridge political activist Linda Sarsour announced on Tuesday, February 21 that, after 11 years, she will be stepping down as executive director of the Ridge-based Arab American Association of New York to pursue a more "national" agenda. Sarsour, whose profile has been heightened since signing on as one of four key organizers of last month’s historic Women’s March on Washington, held the day after the presidential inauguration, plans to remain active within the Arab-American community in Brooklyn, but also become more active on a “national level.” Founded in 2001, the Arab American Association of New York's mission is to "support and empower the Arab Immigrant and Arab American community by providing services to help them adjust to their new home and become active members of society," according to its website. —Meaghan McGoldrick CARIBBEAN BUSINESS THREATENED WITH EVICTION GETS NEW LEASE Errol's Bakery, a Jamaican eatery famous for its jerk chicken, just won a new lease at an affordable rent from landlord Rothstein Management, thanks to a #SaveErrolsBakery Campaign started by grassroots group Equity for Flatbush. After hearing that Errol's was going to be evicted after its lease ran out, E4F reached out to Dorothy and Errol Miller before launching petitions that amassed over 1,500 signatures, and filming a video "calling on Rothstein Management to do the right thing." —Danielle Kogan ROBBER WHO SHOT OFF-DUTY COP SENTENCED A 24-year-old Manhattan man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison and five years post-release supervision for robbing an off-duty police officer and three others at gunpoint while they sat in a parked car on July 28, 2015. Tori Saunders pleaded guilty last month to being one of two individuals who approached the Range Rover on Linden Boulevard near Miller Avenue and taking cash, cell phones, jewelry and other items from four victims before opening fire, hitting the vehicle and Tramaine Oxley of the NYPD Housing Bureau. Oxley was driven to Brookdale Hospital and treated for two gunshot wounds. Saunders and the other robber fled the scene in a blue BMW, according to evidence; the investigation subsequently recovered a fingerprint that matched Saunders'; he was apprehended during a car stop in Nassau County and identified by Oxley as the assailant. —Danielle Kogan Photo courtesy of State Senator Marty Golden Officers Jean Milord, left, and Thomas Mercado, right, pictured with their families and 62nd Precinct Commanding Officer Anthony Sanseverino. 62nd Precinct officers dubbed cops of the month for saving local woman from suicide attempt BY MEAGHAN MCGOLDRICK [email protected] Hats off. Two 62nd Precinct officers were awarded Cop of the Month honors on Tuesday, February 21 for successfully saving the life of a Bensonhurst woman who cops say attempted suicide late last month. According to Captain Anthony Sanseverino, commanding officer of the 62nd Precinct, at around 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, January 28 the two officers – P.O. Thomas Mercado and P.O. Jean Milord – responded to a 911 call to a residence on 15th Avenue, at which time they discovered a 32-year-old woman unconscious and unresponsive with a belt fastened around her neck. “They immediately called for an ambulance and administered CPR while conducting chest compressions and rescue breathing,” the captain told a crowded room at the 62’s monthly community council meeting, held inside the precinct’s Bath Avenue building on Tuesday, February 21. “They waited to obtain a pulse and then the EMS took over, and transferred her to Maimonides where she eventually lived.” Sanseverino noted that the duo, without a doubt, saved the life of this local resident. “For that, we are honoring them tonight,” he said, noting that the two, though present for the meeting, were also busy studying for Wednesday’s sergeant’s exam. Mercado and Milord were joined at the meeting by their families, and were also rewarded with citations from a number of local politicians. "I congratulate this month's 'Cops of the Month' for the 62nd Precinct and continue to admire and salute their bravery," noted State Senator Marty Golden. "The men and women of the 62nd Precinct continue to serve and protect our community each and every day and save lives. I am proud to have bestowed recognition on behalf of the State Senate to Officers Milord and Mercado thank them on behalf of a grateful neighborhood."
