ERASMUS 40 FORT HAMILTON 8
After earning three hard fought
wins to start the season, the
3-0 fifth place Fort Hamilton
Tigers hosted the 3-0 Erasmus Dutchmen
who lead the PSAL City Championship
Division in power points for
first place.
Averaging 42 points a game, the
juggernaut from Flatbush presented
an uphill challenge for Fort Hamilton,
especially with the Tigers’ starting
quarterback sitting out with an injury.
Standing on the sidelines and recording
the game, quarterback Yusef
Farraj watched backup quarterback/
kicker Justin Coote take the Tigers’
snaps from center after sustaining
a hairline-fractured arm last week
against New Utrecht.
Right from the first quarter, the
Dutchmen’s offense showed why the
team leads the league with a perfectly
thrown 30-yard touchdown pass from
Jordan Armstead to a high-leaping
Aron Cruickshank at the back stripe
of the end zone.
Although the Tiger defense held
Erasmus at midfield twice on downs,
the Dutchmen opened the second
quarter with a Shamar Logan run for
20 yards to put “Ehall” ahead 14-0.
Midway in the second quarter, the
Dutchmen put an early “nail in the
coffin” when Erasmus safety Christian
Izien ran back a 35-yard punt for a
touchdown, followed by another Izien
score on a 50-yard interception return
to give Erasmus a 28-0 lead at halftime.
Sean Ryan made the score 34-0
for Erasmus on a 10-yard reception
at the end of the third quarter, while
the Tigers struggled for at least one
touchdown to prevent a shutout.
Finally in the fourth quarter, the Tigers
eked out a score as Coote ran for a
12-yard touchdown to make the score 34-
8. Ryan followed up his previous score
with another touchdown on a three-yard
pass for the 40-8 Erasmus win.
With his arm in a sling, sidelined
Tiger quarterback Farraj stated, “This
game was a real test for us today. It will
show us what we really have to work
on for next week. We’ll be ready for
them if we meet in the playoffs.”
