MENS’ CLUB BY PAUL NETTLER Unfortunately, due to the snow conditions on February 9th, we had to cancel our meeting as our speaker couldn’t make it. We will re-schedule Saul Silas Fathi for another date. Our speaker for our March meeting will be Dr. Elliot Gross. A Columbia College alumnus and New York University Medical School graduate, Elliot Gross received his pathology training at Bellevue Hospital, and in the specialty of forensic pathology, at the office of Chief Medical Examiner in New York City. As a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Gross was assigned to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C. and was a member of the human factors panels investigating military, NASA and commercial aircraft accidents. Board certified in forensic pathology, he has served as the first Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Connecticut and as Chief Medical Examiner for the City of New York. Subsequently, he has held government posts in Indiana, Ohio and New Jersey until his retirement as a medical examiner in 2003. Among others, Dr. Gross will tell us about “The Case of the Golden Choker.”’ Sounds as if taken from the pages of a Sherlock Holmes story. It involves a body in a swimming pool, a quickly rendered jury verdict and appearances before both the Connecticut and U.S. Supreme Courts. Coffee and cake will be served and Guests will be welcome with a $5.00 fee payable at the door. Last month, we went to press before the Current Events Group meeting, so we will do some catch up now. Again, the meeting was chaired by Ralph Edwards and the theme was looking back at 2016 and forward to 2017. Once again, those in attendance demonstrated their astute knowledge of what is presently going on in the world. There was a discussion regarding this country’s security. In connection with that, the Snowden affair was touched upon, as well as Russia’s involvement in our politics. The Affordable Care Act was talked about and that old chestnut, The Electoral College. Looking forward, what will be our relationship with Israel in light of Biden’s abstaining rather than vetoing the last anti-Israel U.N. Resolution? This should be of interest in light of Trump’s scheduled visit with Netanyahu this week. The feeling was that they will be discussing the two state solution. The new Cabinet (especially the Secretary of Education, who will be receiving on the job training) was critiqued. As we have several educators in the group, this was a lively discussion. The conversation also turned to Chicago as a perfect example of a failed socio-economic environment. Other topics included The Supreme Court, abortion and military preparedness. Actually, the topic that caused much consternation was l’affair Oakley vs. Dolan. This could affect Knicks basketball for generations to come. We cannot report on February’s Current Events Group, as we went to press before the meeting. We’ll catch up next month. On January 17, thirty-one of us braved the inclement weather for a satisfying dinner at Café Cardini. Thanks to Joe DiGiovanni, everything went off smoothly. Our Super Bowl party was a “Super” event, a most exciting game to say the least. By now I’m sure you’ve heard about it many times. I even overheard two elderly ladies discussing it in a doctor’s office waiting room. The interesting thing about it was most of the thirty odd members in attendance in the Coleridge Lounge were rooting for Atlanta. There were two kinds of heroes: edible ones and those on the gridiron. The food—catered by Ivarone Bros. with a side dish of homemade flan—was perfect for our temporary “man cave.” Once again, Joe was our Maître d’. He speaks the language! On March 23, we are planning a dinner at Pearl East. Guests will be welcome at a cost of $39 each. Our popular monthly Bingo night will be held on February 26 and March 26 at 7:30 in the large card room opposite the theatre. Will we see you at breakfast? Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 9 a.m. at Buffy’s (Towers Restaurant). If you would like to join our Men’s Club, please call Joe DiGiovanni at 516-965-9225. March Men's Club Speaker, Dr. Elliot M. Gross former Chief Medical Examiner of New York City March 23 dinner will be held at Pearl East in Manhasset 28  NORTH SHORE TOWERS COURIER  ¢  March 2017
