BROOKLYN’S GOT CULTURE!
Brooklyn is a cultural cornerstone, no matter how you look at it. Our
borough has spawned music as varied as Jay-Z and Barbra Streisand
and has a strong written tradition, dating back to Walt Whitman, a
one-time editor of the Brooklyn Eagle. Thousands of artists and artistic
institutions call Brooklyn both home and an inspiration, drawing from
the many infl uences that Brooklynites and their cultural expressions
provide every day.
Throughout the fi rst six months in offi ce, Borough President Adams’
administration has been on a mission to strengthen Brooklyn’s
cultural soul, starting right here at home at Brooklyn Borough Hall. He
has displayed paintings and sculptures from local artists, welcomed
music from schools across the borough and invited crews from the
small screen to the silver screen to use the building as a magnifi cent
backdrop. He has played host to a wide variety of heritage events,
from celebrating Black History Month and Women’s History Month, to
acknowledging nationalities from Greece to Guatemala, from China
to the Caribbean.
“Brooklyn is the richest place on the planet, based on the wealth
of our cultural and ethnic diversity, as well as our experience,” said
Borough President Adams. “Young people are on the beginning of a
creative journey that may ultimately take them to BAM, the Bell House
and beyond. Brooklyn is a better place when music is playing, dancers
are moving and our youth are getting engaged in positive activities.”
With non-profi t and cultural organizations proliferating in
neighborhoods from East New York to East Williamsburg, Borough
President Adams wants to bring Brooklynites through Borough
Hall’s doors. Events to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, LGBT Pride, Cinco
de Mayo and Haitian Flag have fostered relationships and brought
hundreds of Brooklynites to Borough Hall, also known as the People’s
House, where they can partake of the borough’s rich diversity as well
as join in the brother and sisterhood that unite us all.
This August, Borough President Adams will host International Day of
Friendship at Borough Hall, a global celebration where “ambassadors”
of different ethnicities will share their culture, including their dress,
art and cuisine. The event fi ts with his stated vision of showing
Brooklynites that they are welcome as part of the larger community,
which can help increase civic engagement and bring neighborhoods
together as well as advance cross-cultural partnerships within those
neighborhoods.
As Brooklyn’s cultural infl uence continues to grow, Borough
President Adams will keep on championing its schools, ethnicities,
diverse organizations, institutions, art and most of all, its people,
opening up the doors of the People’s House for Brooklynites young
and old.
“Pride is what I feel for my ‘One Brooklyn’ family, and pride is
something we can all celebrate and share,” said Borough President
Adams. “I am so excited for Brooklyn and our future together which,
given our wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, holds
tremendous promise. May we always celebrate one another here
in the County of Kings and continue the substantial contributions
we’ve made to the culture, commerce and society of our beloved
borough.”
