Queens certainly has some wide-ranging weather in March… good thing the entertainment options are varied as well. People in the world’s most diverse county can enjoy everything from a raucous Hindu street festival to visceral Shakespeare to romantic Peruvian music to a Chinese circus. Here’s a list of the month’s activities. The ReelAbilities Film Festival will visit the Central Queens Y in Forest Hills and Museum of the Moving Image over the first and second weekends in March. All movies are about and/or by people with disabilities, and post-film discussions and author talks are scheduled. (ny.reelabilities.org) Musica Reginae will present an Evening of Chamber Music at The Church-in-the-Gardens in Forest Hills on March 11, at 7:30 pm. The Con Brio Ensemble plays works for piano and strings featuring pianist Barbara Podgurski and showcasing Dvorak and Dohnanyi with a wild ending by American composer Peter Schickele. (musicareginae.org) Walnut Street Theatre will bring the Neil Simon play Last of the Red Hot Lovers to Queens Theatre in Flushing Meadows Corona Park on March 10 (8 pm), March 11 (2 pm and 8 pm), and March 12 (3 pm). After 22 years of marriage, Barney Cashman, an overweight restaurant owner, feels the desire to roam. He makes several attempts at seduction, all of which fail hilariously. (queenstheatre.org) The 29th Annual Phagwah Parade will make its way through Richmond Hill on March 12. The “move off” is scheduled for noon at 133rd Street and Liberty Avenue. Expect floats with Guyanese women in colorful costumes, loud music, and plenty of talcum powder. The parade will continue to Phil Rizzuto Park (formerly Smokey Oval Park) for a program with food, chanting, incense, and dance. (lakshmee.com) The Con Brio Ensemble will hit the Voelker Orth Museum in Flushing on March 12 at 2 pm. Diana Mittler- Battipaglia (piano), Alexander Meshibovsky (violin), Alan Hollander (oboe), and Osceola Davis (soprano) crank out Strauss, Telemann, Dvorak, and other composers. (vomuseum.org) Scholar Tara Rider presents The Devil in New York: The Witchcraft Trial of Goody Garlick at King Manor Museum in Jamaica on March 19 at 2 pm. She’ll discuss the turmoil of everyday life in 17th century New York when hysteria caused accusations of witchcraft. (kingmanor.org) Thanks to Kupferberg Center for the Arts, Fred Barton’s American Showstoppers: An Evening of Kander & Ebb will be at Queens College’s LeFrak Concert Hall on March 12 at 3 pm. This act features two dozen Broadway classics. (kupferbergcenter. org) The Queens World Film Festival will screen 135 movies at the Museum of the Moving Image and Kaufman Astoria Studios from March 14 through March 19. Screenings are arranged in themed blocks such as Cheaters, Twisted Love Stories, and The Immigrant. Twenty-three films from Queens are to be shown as wells as 12 from Germany, seven from Spain, and four from Iran. Eight films are by Asian filmmakers. (queensworldfilmfestival.com) The Calpulli Mexican Dance Company presents Boda Mexicana at Queens Theatre on March 18 at 8 pm and March 19 at 3 pm. It’s a story told through dance and music about the union of two people as expressed by different ethnic groups, eras, and traditions. Tony-winning Broadway powerhouse Billy Porter will take the stage at Queensborough Performing Arts Center in Bayside on March 19 at 3 pm. He has starred in Kinky Boots, Miss Saigon, Five Guys Named Moe, Grease, Smokey Joe’s Café, and Dreamgirls. On this night, he’ll do songs from these roles and tributes to other artists who have inspired him. (visitqpac.org) Susana Baca and Nano Stern will play LeFrak on March 19 at 3 pm. Baca is an Afro-Peruvian musical legend who sings protest and romantic songs. Stern is a rising star who prefers traditional Chilean music. (kupferbergcenter.org) King Lear will run at The Secret Theatre in Long Island City from March 23 until April 9. This version introduces audiences to New York City’s wealthy real estate titans. King Lear, suffering the beginnings of Alzheimer’s disease, must divide his empire among his feuding children while wrestling with his own mortality. (secrettheatre.com) The New Shanghai Circus hits QPAC on March 24 at 8 pm. After a six-week run on Broadway, these fearless performers will bring more than 2,000 years of Chinese circus traditions to the stage. (visitqpac.org) Flushing Town Hall will host Global Mashup 1: Spain meets Garifuna on March 24 at 8 pm. This concert mixes two cultures on one dance floor. Each band plays a set, then the two meet and jam. Basilio Georges and his Flamenco Latino join Lucy Blanco and the Afri-Garifuna Jazz Ensemble, which does a fusion of jazz and Garifuna music. (Garifunas are an ethnic group consisting of the descendants of Africans who rejected slavery and settled in villages along the north coast of Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Nicaragua as well as some Caribbean islands such as St. Vincent.) Dance lessons are at 7 pm. (f lushingtownhall.org) Titan Theatre Company will put on a visceral version of Twelfth Night at Queens Theatre from March 24 to April 9. After a shipwreck, Viola builds a new life while fearing her twin brother is dead in this Shakespeare comedy. Masquerading as a man in order to get a job, she ends up in a topsy-turvy love triangle. (titantheatrecompany.com) The Onderdonk House hosts Candlelight Tours of its Ridgewood grounds on March 25 from 5 pm to 8 pm. Mulled cider and live entertainment add to the experience. (onderdonkhouse.org) The Russian National Ballet performs Swan Lake at QPAC on March 26, at 3 pm. The dancers convey the German fairy tale about Prince Siegfried, who fights to free the beautiful Odette from an evil sorcerer’s spell.
