And judging by the amount of votes, it’s also the most popular. Each year, the organizers of the air show give us a little different flavor, and each year they continue to impress. There’s nothing quite like watching the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds soar above the clouds or U.S. Navy Blue Angels rocket across the sky. The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach occurs each Memorial Day Weekend, which is magical in and of itself, because there’s always a hopeful glow amid the transition from spring to summer. What better way to ring in the summer season than with a glorious military spectacle! There is no better way! Best Art Gallery Huntington Arts Council 213 Main St., Huntington. 631-271-8423. huntingtonarts.org There’s something quite special about having a community art gallery so citizens better appreciate the world around them and the complexities of everyday life. The Huntington Arts Council, a nonprofit, has been so instrumental in educating adults and children alike about art that Long Islanders voted it the Best Art Gallery on the island! It’s a welldeserved honor for the Huntington Arts Council, which endeavors to promote art and culture to today’s youth and other art lovers through the inspiring creations adorning its gallery. The council has a long history on the island, having been founded in 1963. Since then, it has played a majestic role in the island’s vibrant cultural scene. Extraordinary! Best Artist/ Painter Theresa Christensen theresachristensenart.com We should all stand together to applaud Theresa Christensen’s unbelievable work. The longtime artist draws her inspiration from pop culture; particularly TV shows and films, making her one of the most unique artists around. Christensen studied visual arts at SUNY New Paltz and has continued to contribute in inspiring ways to LI’s art world. Her paintings of pop culture icons like Amy Winehouse and Zooey Deschanel are simply extraordinary. Her “Heisenbreg” canvas is a sight to behold, capturing with near perfection the evolution of a down-on-his-luck biology teacher to drug kingpin. Christensen’s work has been shown throughout LI and New York. With this golden age of television, we can’t wait to see what else she has in store! Best Author on Long Island Nelson DeMille nelsondemille.net Nelson DeMille, the prolific author and bookselling juggernaut, has once again claimed the top prize as Best Author on Long Island. The writer responsible for such novels as “Plum Island,” “Night Fall” and “The Gold Coast”—all of which take part on Long Island—continues to churn out an impressive collection of novels that are both gripping and thoughtprovoking. Perhaps DeMille’s most famous character, John Corey, remains one of the most recognized names in suspense and thriller books worldwide. And by using LI as his inspiration, DeMille has made his home region proud, once again! 17
