BROOKLYN WEEKLY, DEC. 16, 2018

They ate, drank juice, and were
merry!
Young scholars at Gravesend’s
IS 281, the Joseph B. Cavallaro
School, spread the holiday spirit
among family and friends at the
learning house’s annual Yuletide
party, a year-end event that is as
fun to put together as it is to attend,
according to an organizer.
“I love doing this,” said school
parent Christine Dimatteo. “I fi nd
it truly rewarding.”
The Dec. 5 Holiday Festival
kicked off just as classes wound
down for the day, with students
booking it to the middle school’s
cafeteria to mingle with more
than 600 of their loved ones and
pals as soon as the last bell rang.
The festivities included making
paper snowfl akes, performances
by the school’s chorus and
dance team, and a feast featuring
grub donated by local eateries,
including pasta, meatballs, and
salad from Gargiulo’s, pizza from
Fratelli’s, burritos from Chipotle
Mexican Grill, and desserts from
Elegante Pastry Shop, among others,
said Dimatteo.
And IS 281 Principal Maria
Bender, teachers, and other administrators
stuck around to
serve the grub to the kids and
HOLIDAY SPIRIT: (From left) Volunteers served up food that local eateries and
vendors donated for the party at IS 281. Kids and their parents packed the school’s
cafeteria for the Holiday Festival. Santa Claus managed to sneak away from the
North Pole and surprise the attendees. Christine Dimatteo
their pals, she said.
Two very special guests also
stopped by — Santa Claus, who
took time off from his very busy
days at the North Pole to greet the
kids, and New York Mets mascot
Mr. Met, who with the jolly old elf
posed for photos with their adoring
fans, according to Dimatteo.
The bash concluded with 75
giveaways to some of the lucky
partygoers, including gift cards
to nearby businesses such as L&B
Spumoni Gardens, Leo’s Casa
Calamari, and Dolphin Fitness,
among others, the organizer said.
