CACNY appeals for Christmas presents for homeless children
By Nelson A. King
The Brooklyn-based Caribbean
American Center of New
York (CACNY) is appealing for
the public’s support in order to
provide new toys and clothing
for 1,000 children in New York
City’s homeless shelters and
others in the community.
According to CACNY’s Trinidadian
born co-founder Jean
P. Alexander, the organization
did not anticipate the US’ trade
war with China and the closure
of Toys R’ Us “would become a
Scrooge they have to battle.”
“This makes the group’s
Caribbean Holiday Party on
Dec. 7 even more important,”
she said, stating that, for the
first time in 21 years, CACNY
will sponsor a special Holiday
Event Fundraiser at BKLYN
Commons, 495 Flatbush Ave.,
2nd floor, Brooklyn, from 9: 00
pm to 2:00 am, to raise funds
to purchase needed clothes and
toys for the children.
“Since 1998, CACNY has presented
over 38,000 gift bags of
new clothes and toys to needy
children,” Alexander added.
“This year, the center needs
your help.
“Please support the group’s
event by purchasing tickets on
Eventbrite at (68803112963)
and at CACNY’s Office,” she
continued.
Tickets also available at
Charlie’s Records, 1273 Fulton
St., Brooklyn, and at Tropical
Paradise Restaurant, 888 Utica
Ave., at Church Ave., Brooklyn.
Alexander said 100 percent
of the proceeds from this
year’s holiday fundraiser will
go towards CACNY’s free youth
programs, and the purchasing
of toys and clothing “to pack
into 1,000 gift bags the group
expect to prepare for hundreds
of children who live in NYC’s
Homeless Shelters and other
children in need.”
CACNY says on its website
that it provides multi-services
to under-served minority youth
“to enhance their quality of life
by providing and/or facilitating
adequate access to economic,
educational (STEM & SAT
tutoring), training, employment,
immigration/citizenship,
civic involvement, youth
leadership development and
other issues.”
