Caribbean Life, Feb. 1–7, 2019 39
On July 1st, 2016, Dr. Matthew
O. Jones proudly opened
the doors to his interventional
cardiology practice –
BKLYNCardio - in the heart
of downtown Brooklyn. His
journey, which is far from
over, spans three cities and
seven years of training post
medical school. Notably, the
training for interventional
cardiology is one of the longest
tracks in medicine.
In addition to consulting
patients, as an interventional
cardiologist, Dr. Jones performs
minimally invasive
procedures that utilize catheters
and small incisions instead
of traditional surgery.
Dr. Jones performs procedures
such as; implantation
of coronary stents to hold
open previously blocked arteries
of the heart, clearing
blockages in the arteries of
the legs to improve circulation
and vein ablation procedures
- a process used to shut
down dysfunctional veins in
the leg that cause varicose
veins, pain and/or swelling.
Upon completion of training,
Dr. Jones was eager to return
to the city where he was
born and raised. Dr. Jones is
passionate about the cardiovascular
needs of the community.
A staunch advocate
of healthy dietary habits and
physical activity, Dr. Jones
strives to advance his patients
to an optimal level of health.
His fervor for the field of
cardiology stemmed from the
passing of his Grandmother
in 2001. An otherwise, very
healthy woman, his grandmother
suffered from heart
disease and ultimately heart
failure. Her passing served
as a catalyst for Dr. Matthew
Jones to study the heart and
help those like her. Dr. Jones
expressed, “I felt completely
helpless when my grandmother
passed away. At that
moment, I committed myself
to understanding how the
heart functions and how I can
be a vehicle for positive solutions.”
In addition, as an avid
tech enthusiast, Dr. Jones is
drawn to the intersection of
technology and cardiology.
Through the integration of
technology, Dr. Jones believes
he can greatly impact people’s
lives and health outcomes. As
an innovator, he was instrumental
in the development of
a novel personal cardiovascular
monitoring device, Everbeat.
He currently serves as
the Co-Chief Medical Officer
in the company.
Dr. Jones’ career in medicine
can almost be deemed
inevitable. His mother, a registered
nurse, ascended to
the height of nurse manager
and his father is an internist
and cardiologist. The road
traveled for his mother and
father, wasn’t always easy.
Both his mother and father
immigrated to the US from
very humble beginnings in
Jamaica and Trinidad, respectively.
Through hard
work and commitment, they
both became dedicated practitioners
in the field of medicine.
Growing up seeing his
parents persevere despite
challenging circumstances,
motivated Dr. Jones to set his
sights high and open his own
specialty practice.
His father, Dr. Romeo
Jones, established his practice
– Atlantis Medical Center - in
downtown Brooklyn over 30
years ago. Dr. Romeo Jones,
a staple in the community for
practicing exceptional care,
has laid the foundation and
served as a prime example
of practicing patient centric
medicine. Dr. Romeo Jones is
proudly working alongside his
son, Dr. Matthew Jones and is
delighted to pass the baton.
At BKLYNCardio, Dr.
Matthew Jones utilizes his
clinical acumen and technical
expertise to address the
epidemic of cardiovascular
and peripheral vascular disease
that plague far too many
residents of his beloved city.
