COURIER LIFE, A M BR B G PRIL 26–MAY 2, 2019 11
Give your children the same
fond memories of day camp that
you experienced growing up.
“Kids need day camp, now,
more than ever,” says Jack Grosbard,
owner of Mill Basin Day
Camp. “It can enrich one’s life in
unexpected ways.”
Mill Basin Day Camp provides
children with wonderful
summer experiences that will
prepare them for the future while
they have fun.
The program engages children
in activities that promote
character-building, healthy living,
and interacting with the
community, he says. Children
spend enough time indoors all
year long, playing video games,
watching television, and maybe,
doing some homework. Summer
is the time to get outside and experience
the world. Mill Basin
Day Camp provides this opportunity.
“Kids need to catch tadpoles
in the creek, wander among the
trees, and feel the sun on their
faces, to understand the importance
of those things,” Grosbard
says.A
s they learn about the great
outdoors, they become more concerned
about the environment,
the planet, and the community in
which they live. In short, being a
good camper means being a productive
citizen. That’s what Mill
Basin Day Camp is all about.
The camp’s philosophy is to
provide children and their families
with a fun, safe, and caring
summer camp experience.
“Through innovative programming
and careful staff selection,
our campers will make
friends, share experiences, and
build memories that last a lifetime,”
says Grosbard.
Children enjoy activities such
as an outdoor pool, with four
slides. There’s a 15,000-square
foot sports center where they can
participate in volleyball, handball,
basketball, and paddleball.
Attention all climbers, builders,
athletes, cowboys, and cowgirls:
New this year is a 60-foot climbing
and rope jungle gym, a Lego
lab, Tiny Western Town, and
6,000-square foot Turf Athletic
Field.
New for 2019: Lazer maze, virtual
reality, rock climbing, Mad
Science, two new dance studios,
and locker rooms!
Mill Basin Day Camp meets
the needs of every camper.
There’s a multi-media center, Karaoke
studio, arts and crafts, two
computer labs, circus program,
Nintendo Wii Room, theater,
dance studios, and much more.
No matter what a child’s interest,
Mill Basin Day Camp has it
covered.
The staff is comprised of professionals,
and many of them
work in child-related fields
throughout the year. The staff
includes licensed New York City
Department of Education teachers
and deans. Aquatics programs
are staffed by certified and
licensed personnel, as required
by the Board of Health and the
American Red Cross, he says.
“We equip our staff and facility
with the latest, most modern,
safety and technological products,”
says Grosbard. “Safety is
our highest priority.”
Throughout the building
there are video cameras that are
taping at all times, he says.
“Every activity room is
equipped with a phone that connects
to 911 and to the main camp
office, via intercom. We also have
a public address system throughout
the facility, and each of our
directors carries two-way phones
and radios so we stay in constant
contact.”
The modern, fully air-conditioned
facility offers a wide range
of age-appropriate activities for
children ages 3 to 14.
Grosbard says he understands
the needs of working parents, so
the camp has a flexible registration
program. Parents can make
adjustments by adding, subtracting
or changing weeks.
“It is never a problem at any
time,” he says. “If summer school
is a worry for you, our program
is entirely refundable at any time
prior to the first day of camp.”
The camp starts on Monday,
July 1, and runs through Friday,
Aug. 23. Campers can participate
in programs that run from four to
eight weeks, or three, four, or five
days per week.
“Camp promotes community,”
says Grosbard. “It teaches children
how to get along with others,
how to work in groups, and
how to look out for one another.
They understand there are rules
and boundaries, as they learn to
socialize with members outside
of their immediate family.”
As children begin to understand
the leadership roles of
camp directors and counselors,
they learn to become leaders
themselves, he says.
Parents are welcome to contact
Mill Basin Day Camp to tour
the facility and speak with a representative.
“We have grown over the past
21 years to become the most popular
summer camp program in
the Brooklyn, Queens, and now
Staten Island and Long Island areas,”
says Grosbard. See for yourself
