FORT HAMILTON 18
NEW UTRECHT 14 It was a clash of neighborhood
rivals as the 1-1 Utes visited the
host 2-0 Tigers who were looking
to extend their unbeaten record to
three wins. Led by quarterback Michael
Wayne, New Utrecht brought
down to Shore Road one of the PSAL’s
top inside runners and a formidable
offensive line prepared to serve up the
Tigers’ first loss of the season.
On New Utrecht’s first possession,
quarterback Wayne led the Utes down
to the six yard line where running
back Brandon Jones (188 yards; two
TDs) powered into the end zone behind
his surging offensive line to give
the Green and White a quick 6-0 lead.
Following that first score, the Tigers
set loose Nicholas Wynter (103 yards;
two TDs) on a sweep that would result
in a 60-yard touchdown run to tie
the game at 6-6 by the end of the first
quarter.
Approaching the end of the second
quarter, Fort Hamilton quarterback
Yusef Farraj’s ability to remain in the
game came into question when he
hyper-extended his left arm on the
takedown of a New Utrecht tackle.
After sitting out the rest of the second
quarter, Farraj returned in the second
half to break the 6-6 halftime tie.
After the Tigers gained the ball back
to open the third quarter, Farraj (102
yards; one TD) executed a deceptive
“read-option” run down the sideline
for 25 yards to put Fort Hamilton
ahead, 12-6.
With just one score separating the
two teams in the fourth quarter, the
Tigers gained some distance as Farraj
again ran the ball into New Utrecht
territory to set up Wynter’s 35-yard
sprint to the end zone to make the
score 18-12 with 4:23 left in the game.
Not to be denied a shot at the win,
quarterback Wayne quickly assembled
his Ute offense and drove 55 yards
to set up a Jones 15-yard touchdown
run that would place New Utrecht
just four points behind Fort Hamilton,
18-14.
Winding down to the two-minute
mark, the Fort Hamilton defense made
a critical stop at midfield to prevent
New Utrecht’s surging offense from
getting a “go-ahead” touchdown.
Pushing the ball into the New
Utrecht end on the Tigers’ last
offensive series, Farraj insured
the win in the final seconds by
“taking a knee” at the 20 yard line
to end the game.
Commenting on the win, Farraj
stated, “It’s good to be 3-0; everyone
did their job today. I didn’t like sitting
out so I had to fight through that arm
injury to come back in the second half
to help my team get the win.”
Wynter, the junior running back
who scored two touchdowns, credited
his offensive line for opening holes for
him, stating, “I just love my O-line. I
owe everything to them!”
