Each year, St. Athanasius Church
holds a week-long summer celebration
in honor of St. Anthony,
bringing food, rides and games to the
street outside the church.
This year, a couple of hundred people
stopped by every night, according
to Publicity Chairperson Rocco Imbriale,
during the event, which began
on Wednesday, June 7 and lasted until
Monday, June 12 at 61sy Street and Bay
Parkway.
From 6 to 11 p.m., every day, there
were rides outdoors that were popular
among children, games of chance for
adults inside, and a selection of generally
Italian cuisine. In the streets,
music could be heard from the festival,
keeping the energy up.
According to Imbriale, visitors
"come from all over" to enjoy the festival,
with proceeds going into a church
education program. Imbriale said
his favorite part was "a tremendous
parade for Saint Anthony and his
followers."
Today, Saint Anthony is thought
of in the Roman Catholic Church as
the patron saint of lost things, and is
o en credited with miracles involving
lost people, lost objects and even lost
spiritual commodities.
