OBITUARIES
MCBRIDE, Anna Katherine
Ericksen, April
8, 1920–April 16, 2017,
passed away peacefully
in her sleep on Easter
morning at the age of 97.
She enjoyed growing up
in Ulmer Park, Brooklyn,
one of five children.
Her parents, Jon and
Gurine Ericksen, emigrated
from Norway
and settled in America
in the early 1900s. Katherine
met and married
a quiet gentleman,
Hugh McBride and they
were later blessed with
their only child, Hugh
John, who later became
“One of N.Y.’s Finest.” It
was her outgoing and
energetic personality
that caught everyone’s
attention. She began
her working career at
the Metropolitan Life
Insurance Co. and then
at the Veterans Hospital,
always in the capacity
of helping people. Katherine
was a long-time
member of the Church
of the Good Shepherd
where, each Sunday
morning, she faithfully
served refreshments in
the Soul Café. At the age
of90, Senator Golden
presented Katherine
with a plaque in recognition
of her years of
service to the community
and her church.
She wouldn’t hesitate to
strike up a conversation
with anyone who caught
her eye, had an exceptional
memory and
could tell you the history
of Brooklyn with the
greatest enthusiasm.
She was drawn to little
children and they to her,
making them smile and
laugh with her funny
antics. Katherine is predeceased
by her beloved
husband Hugh and dear
son Hugh John; four
siblings (Alfin Ericksen,
Agnes Ellefsen, Dorothy
Wilkins and Evelyn
Salerno); nephews
Robert Ellefsen, Sonny
and Richard Ericksen;
and niece Barbara. She
is survived by her beloved
grandson Shawn
McBride and daughterin
law Barbara Boka;
nephew Craig Ellefsen;
nieces Trina Wilkins,
Julie Knutzen, Lori
Abel, Christine Higgins,
Kathryn Knutzen, Jennifer
Notari and Lauri
Salerno; good friends
Jeannette Knowles and
Joyce Allison; and nephews
Bert, John, Joseph,
Steven and Paul Salerno,
Leroy, Eric, Lyle and
Thane Wilkins and Steven
and Peter Knutzen.
Her dear neighbors
and friends Arlene,
May, Mary, Katherine,
John and Ann, Donald,
Danny, Bob, Conrad
and Marissa are to be
praised for their compassion
by taking her

Along with her three

on Cherry Street
on the Lower East Side of

her family, including
rock star daughter Vanessa,
ran circles around
their neighborhood in
Bensonhurst, attending
weekly Sunday dinners
with the extended family
and festive Fourth of
July celebrations on the
corner of Bath Avenue.
Eventually, the sprawl
of Long Island called her
name and off to a new adventure
she went, bringing
her city chic style and
