MAY 9 C RY D E R P O I N T Getting down to business. Talk about heavy duty! WWW.QNS.COM | MAY 2017 | CRYDER POINT COURIER 9 BY JILL DAVIS It’s been nearly five years since the beach was last given some much-needed TLC as the construction of the seawall and new stairs to the beach had to be taken care of first. About 40 Cryder Point residents— twice as many as participated in 2012--got together on Saturday, April 29, to tackle the chore once again. This time, it was all about moving rocks to make the area more useable and enjoyable for the summer. And boy, were there a lot of rocks! The effort started at low tide, 10am, and there was only a twohour window to get as much done as possible before high tide washed in. The volunteers quickly organized and developed an efficient assembly line system to pick up, pass along and throw the smaller rocks to the jetty. The jetty, by the way, was cautiously guarded by a nesting goose who watched the proceedings with a very protective eye until she was assured that all was safe. (All of the volunteers, of course, were careful not to disturb her.) Many rocks, however, were very large and heavy and required two strong guys to move them. Others were nearly impossible to budge. In fact you may be curious about the photo of the “rock chair,” which looks like it could be a remnant from Stonehenge. It was, in fact, created on the spot and more or less by happenstance; the “seat” of the chair was already set well into the sand, and it was given a new “back” when a super-heavy stone could barely be excavated and wound up being positioned quite nicely to create the best seat on the beach. The end result of all the hard work is mighty impressive, and thanks go to one and all who came down to pitch in and make one of Cryder Point’s special places even more so. Big Cleanup for Our Little Beach Let’s get organized! Look closely and you’ll see this watchful goose checking out the work. A double assembly line made the most of a short amount of time. After the clean up--what a difference! Photo by Dorene Finnegan He’s got the right idea! Now that’s a unique beach chair (cushions not included)
