Happenings at the LeFrak City Library
You expect to fi nd books at a
library, but what about movie
screenings, fitness classes,
concerts and spelling competitions?
Th e LeFrak City Library, located at
98-30 57th Avenue, in Section #4 of
the campus, off ers all that and more –
and all of it’s free. Here are some upcoming
events worth putting on the
calendar:
Egg Decorating: Bring your Easter
game up to a whole new level at a
decorating workshop taught by a local
artist. March 28, 3 p.m.
Break Dancing: A class for teens
by the Breaking Institute of the
Arts explores the history of hip-hop
dance and the development of creative
movement. Students are introduced
to the foundation of the form
in order built their own style, vocabulary
technique and fl ow. March
29, 4 p.m.
Black Experience Book Discussion:
Part of a series of fi lm and book
discussions of contemporary issues
impacting the black community.
“Queen Sugar,” Natalie Baszile’s book
about a woman who unexpectedly inherits
a Louisana sugarcane farm, is
the topic on March 29; Kimberla Lawson’s
“Copycat,” about an obsessive
friendship, will be discussed April 19.

Craft s: Learn to make a washi tape
picture frame at an adult craft workshop,
and turn an inexpensive frame
into something special. Registration
is required and some supplies may be

Preschool Fun: Kids ages 3-5 can
listen to some stories and engage in a
craft project. Registration is required
and space is limited, inquire at the

Fitness: Ronald Williams of Get
Right Fitness puts adults through the
paces with his Total Body Workout
program. Bring a towel, a bottle of
water and be ready to sweat. April 2
and every Monday, 6-7:30 p.m.
Toddler Storytime: Children ages
12 months to four years and their adult
caregivers are invited for songs, stories,
nursery rhymes and coloring. April 4
and every Wednesday at 11 a.m.
Family Flick: Th e library’s Family
Movie Night series continues with a
screening of “Coco,” winner of the
Oscar for Best Animated Picture
and a slew of other awards. It’s about
12-year-old Miguel Rivera, an aspiring

musician who’s transported to the

Teen Movie: Teens from the local
community will vote for a fi lm to
view with their peers. April 9, 4 p.m.
Teen Trivia Showdown: Youths
ages 11 to 18 are invited to come test
their wits at a Friends of the Library
Trivia Night. Questions will cover
music, sports, history, and more.

Movie Matinee: Enjoy a new release
or Hollywood favorite at an afternoon
screening; recent titles have
included “Pirates of the Caribbean”
and “Th e Mummy.” Th ursday April

Earth Day Story and Craft : Children
in grades 1 through 5 are invited
for an Earth Day-themed story
and craft session, where they’ll listen
to a story about recycling and make
craft s using recycled materials. April

Fitness class: April 2.
Spellebration: Children in grades
Pre-K through 6th are invited to
compete in the Spellebration spelling
bee, presented by the Friends of
the LeFrak City Library. Registration

Fashion Show: Children and teens
from the community will model traditional
and contemporary fashion
from around the world at a Global
Fashion Show. April 26, 5 p.m.
Where to fi nd free tax help
The deadline for tax filing is
coming up on April 15, and if
you haven’t fi lled out your return
yet – and you had an income less
than $66,000 in 2017 – there are several
nearby opportunities to get free
help, from experts who’ll make sure
your forms are fi led correctly. Th ey’ll
also make sure you take advantage of
any credits you’re eligible for, and that
you get the largest possible refund
you might be due.
Th e NY State Department of Taxation
and Finance is off ering free tax-prep assistance
at the Elmhurst branch of the
Queens Library, along with seven other
libraries. Volunteers speaking English
and Spanish will guide you through
preparing and electronically fi ling your
federal and state returns. Remaining
dates are March 29 and April 5 and 12,
from 12:30-6:30 p.m. Th e library is at
86-07 Broadway; 718-271-1020.
In partnership with State Senator
Jose Peralta, the nonprofi t group
Urban Upbound is off ering free tax
preparation at Peralta’s East Elmhurst
offi ce. Th e service is off ered Wednesdays
from noon to 7 p.m. and Th ursdays
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., through
April 12. Th e offi ce is at 32-37 Junction
Boulevard; call 718-784-0877 for an
appointment, and information about
what you need to bring.
Last, the Financial Clinic’s Volunteer
Income Tax Assistance program is
off ering tax help through the Queens
Community House, at 108-25 62nd
Drive in Forest Hills. Th e help is offered
Tuesdays and Wednesdays from
5 to 9 p.m. Note that for this program,
to be eligible you must have earned
under $54,000 in 2017. If you qualify,
