15 BRONX WEEKLY January 13, 2019 www.BXTimes.com
As a matter of fact, Italian,
Spanish, and seafood
cuisines ‘a la Bronx’ are
some of the borough president’s
all time favorites.
Fortunately for Diaz
and the rest of us, plenty of
those types of restaurants
and others will be shelling
out wonderful deals and
discounts to customers until
the restaurant week concludes
on Saturday, January
19.
Now and most importantly,
what can one get and
where?
In addition to Alfredo
Angueira’s Beatstro, his
fellow restaurant and post-
Yankee game hotspot The
Bronx Drafthouse at 884
Gerard Avenue will also
be participating. It’s over
there that customers can
fi nd a world of craft beers,
‘Highbridge nachos,’ ‘City
Island fi sh and chips,’ in addition
to many other Bronx
noshing indulgences.
Although this one won’t
be around for restaurant
week, Angueria is also
opening the south Bronx’s
fi rst beer garden, Brick &
Hops at 65 Bruckner Boulevard
in the upcoming
weeks.
As it would be a cardinal
sin to exclude Arthur
Avenue from the restaurant
week, naturally Emilia’s of
2331 Arthur Avenue had it’s
rice and meatballs, sauced
and ready to go that Monday,
which Diaz also fancied.
Newly opened Mexican
family restaurant,
Xochimilco at 653 Melrose
Avenue was also serving up
tacos, guacamole and other
Latin goodies. Meanwhile
The Gun Hill Brewing Company
of 3227 Laconia Avenue
had plenty of craft beer
for anyone that was thirsty
for their soft and delicious
pretzel rods.
Neighboring Mott Haven
Bar & Grill at 1 Bruckner
Boulevard also had its
best and most classic dishes
on display.
A few places not present
that Monday but defi nitely
participating in restaurant
week are; Porto Salvo of
424 E. 161st Street, a contemporary
and upscale,
Italian restaurant that was
voted to the top ten ‘best
wine bars in the city’; another
is Kingsbridge Social
Club, where the beer and
prosecco is served on tap
and the pizza is served piping
hot from its 800 degree,
wood fi red brick oven.

participating restaurants,

NEIGHBORHOOD
ASSOCIATION
Yes, there is sight at the
end of the tunnel.
On Wednesday, January
2, the Pelham Parkway
Neighborhood Association
made another delivery to
the Bronx Lions Club of
close to 600 pair of used
eyeglasses collected from
the generous Pelham Parkway
and Morris Park community.
The glasses will be donated
to needy adults and
underprivileged children
in third world countries
throughout the world.
There is a tremendous
need for recycled eyeglasses.
The Lions Club International
will have them
cleaned, sterilized, the prescription
affi xed and then
package and ship them
for distribution to needy
groups and and adults and
children throughout the
world.
The Lions Club is an organization
throughout the
world that empowers volunteers
to serve their communities,
meet humanitarian
needs, encourage peace
and promote international
understanding through Lions
clubs.
Further information
may be available through
their website at www.
bronxlionsclub.org.
“When I fi rst met Bill
Gumbel, secretary of the
Bronx Lions Club, he was
very welcoming to the idea
of donating the eyeglass collection
boxes to my association,”
said Steven Glosser,
Pelham Parkway Neighborhood
Association vice president,
adding. “It’s great
that the PPNA is branching
out into more humanitarian
projects such as this.
We look forward to working
more with Bronx Lions
Club in the future. I check
the collection boxes every
two weeks and am fi nding a
surprisingly large amount
every time.”
For this year’s insightful
project, Gumbel provided
Glosser with ten eyeglass
collection boxes which
he strategically placed
throughout the Pelham
Parkway neighborhood.
He confi rmed him that the
humanitarian project remains
ongoing with no end
date in sight.
“The response was fantastic,”
he expressed. “This
is further proof of the big
hearts the giving people of
Pelham Parkway have.”
He further credited the
effort’s tremendous success
to the collection sites’ staff
members openly promoting
the cause to their many
customers and parishioners.
There are many times
that the participating businesses
call me to pick up
the eyeglasses.
“I encourage other community
and civic organizations,
the Boy/Girl Scouts
to take part in this worthy
cause. All they have to do
is contact the Bronx Lions
Club through their website
like I did and they will
gladly send you the collection
boxes,” he added.
The Lions have 12 major
collection sites in the U.S.
The closest one to us is
in West Trenton, NJ.
The eyeglasses that were
collected by the PPNA for
this collection and another
600 pair that are currently
in their possession will be
sent to a sister club, the
Yonkers Millennium Lions
Club, Bill Gumbel said.
The Bronx Lions currently
have collection
boxes for used eyeglasses
at 19 locations within the
borough.
The following businesses
and organizations
have graciously donated
space for the collection
boxes: Bronx House, 990
Pelham Parkway South;
Apple Bank, 626 Pelham
Parkway South; Pelham
Parkway Vision, 735 Lydig
Avenue; Sterling Optical,
2130 White Plains Road;
Creston Optical, 2169 White
Plains Road; NY Eye Surgery
Center 1101 Pelham
Parkway North; and Eye
Care Unlimited, 1086 Morris
Park Avenue.
