lege curriculum, to help build and nurture
effective partnerships with industry
employers.
Dr. Mullings and his leadership team
are currently identifying and meeting
with prospective industry partners, and
they seek to work closely and collaboratively
with a Lead Industry Employer
partner. Along with the other partners,
the goal is to ensure that students graduate
with the appropriate skills and Associate
Degrees to become employed in
the respective industry, and to provide
internships, mentorships, and access to
resources and other workplace learning
experiences.
In preparing for the high school opening,
this summer Challenge Charter
School added a new role to the Leadership
Team welcoming Kentia Coreus as
Senior Director of Teaching and Learning.
The position is designed to provide
additional focus on Challenge’s
instructional vision for Kindergarten
through Grade 14, aligning values and
charter mandates to improve learning
across grades K-8 as secondary grades
are added.
Coreus explained, “The goal is to
maximize clarity in teaching so that we
help scholars reach their educational
goals, and this is a perfect time to do this
as K-8 alignment aids in the planning of
our High School.”
As a former New York Department
of Education leader, Coreus has worked
in public charter schools for the past 10
years. Like Coreus, Challenge Charter
seeks leading-edge teachers and staff
who uphold and will further the school’s
mission and values. There are several
teachers who have been with Challenge
since the beginning, and the school takes
care to offer competitive pay and excellent
benefits to its employees.
With new teachers and staff coming
on board, preparation for the high
school, and building projects continuing,
application season for the 2020-
21 academic year is already underway.
Whereas once the school started with
Kindergarten scholars to begin the process
of preparing them for entrance into
the best high schools in NYC once they
left 8th grade, the mission of Challenge
Charter School has been updated to
reflect that now it will be one of those
high schools.
Each morning at the end of the Challenge
Charter Middle School Cheetah
Report, scholars are asked to turn to
their teachers and say, “Teach me. Prepare
me. Challenge me.” Using the word
“challenge” as part of the school name
and brand is no accident. It’s a word
that represents the great hurdles that
Mullings and his handful of supporters
overcame to start the school, and it
represents what the scholars face with
each new phase of their academic and
daily life.
No matter the challenges in its Past,
Present or Future, Challenge Charter is
poised to continue to build a legacy of
positive change through the powerful
force of excellent education.
“This is the most exciting and pivotal
time in our school’s history. As we celebrate
our 10-year anniversary next year,
I believe we have shown our families
and neighbors how dedicated we are to
the children, families and the future of
our city. In many ways, I feel we are just
getting started. Keep your eyes on what
is next as Challenge CTE High opens its
doors, giving tangible hope for our current
citizens and training up dynamic
future leaders out of Far Rockaway,”
Rev. Dr. Les Mullings.
