Have you ever read a book that changed your life? I am not a big reader, so I am looking for some inspiration to get on the road to reading. Philip W. Williamsburg Dear Philip, I have read over 600 self-help and motivational books and I can tell you that each one has added something to my life. Some books have impacted my life more than others and most of all I am still reading and re-reading them. I authored a book called The Twelve Powers We Hold Within. Readers are leaders and that is why I can say without a doubt that reading is powerful, even if you only read one page or chapter a day. Start and continue reading, for each book will bring something new into your life. I hope this inspires you to start. All for the best, Smiles Orly Amor MBA International Public speaker Business and Personal Coach Napkin know-how YOUR BEST INVESTMENT: Etiquette for Children Table Napkin Etiquette Do your children automatically reach for the table napkin when seated at a restaurant or dining table? They can be commended for this practice, but they should also be told that if they are invited to dinner, they should wait until the hostess takes her napkin from the table, as this indicates the start of the meal, and when she replaces it, the meal is officially over. (The hostess should ensure her guests are finished before replacing her napkin.) ETIQUETTE BOSS They should also be aware that napkins come in two sizes. The lunch napkin is opened fully on the lap, but this is done discreetly under the table, not opened or shaken over the food. The larger napkin is a dinner napkin, BY PHILLIPA MORRISH which is folded before placing on the lap, with the folded side turned toward the child’s body. The difference is napkin size is due to dinner being traditionally a multi-course meal, where more napkin space might be needed to facilitate patting the lips compared to a one or two course lunch meal. Demonstrate the correct manner of lifting the napkin with thumb over, and forefinger under the napkin, where patting is done with the forefinger before being released back to the lap. Of course, your ambassador-in-training would never wipe the lips as if the napkin were a washcloth. YOUR BEST APPEARANCE: Clear ashy knees and elbows after a long winter The extremes of cold and heat take their toll on our bodies to such an extent that we realize the need for a little extra work to make them ready for public viewing during the summer. Here are some methods we can try at home to clear our knees and elbows. Mix one teaspoon of coconut oil with ½ teaspoon of lime juice. Rub on knees and elbows, wrap with a warm towel and leave for 15 minutes. Soak the towel in hot water and rub vigorously. Mix one teaspoon turmeric with one teaspoon olive oil and a dash of sugar. Rub in circular motions, rinse and apply a moisturizer after drying. Phillipa Morrish is the president of Etiquette Training International. Lighting the way NEIGHBORS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Our unsung heroes I consider this week’s unsung hero a hidden treasure. John DeLosa, also known as Johnnie Lights, has been doing free DJ work at our Lady of Angels and St. Anselm’s whenever needed. He and his partner Brian Long have installed and built the 30 Christmas tree scenes sponsored by Maimonides Medical Center for houses of worship in the Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst and Dyker Heights areas. This 18-year-old project has brought tremendous joy to all of us during the holidays. John and his wife, Evelyn, are proud of their son, John, who operates Cebu Restaurant, on Third Avenue. COMMUNITY NEWS Arlene Rutuelo, president of the 17th of May Norwegian Day Parade Committee, UNSUNG BAY RIDGE BY LARY MORRISH has reminded me that its annual parade will be held on Sunday, May 19, starting at 1 p.m., from 80th Street and Third Avenue to 67th Street and Seventh Avenue in Bay Ridge. Until the 1970s, Bay Ridge was home to the largest Norwegian population outside of Norway. A very happy 64th wedding anniversary to Mae and Howie Dunn. This patriotic couple has been a true example of working and playing together throughout the years. Howie’s passion for the American Legion inspires us all never to forget the sacrifices our men and women in uniform have made to keep us safe. UNSUNG FOLK REMEDIES: Limes Limes are said to be anti-carcinogenic because of the limonoid compounds they contain. It is claimed that this compound helps to prevent cancers of the colon, stomach and blood. The exact mechanism through which limonoid compound kills cancerous cells in unknown, but it is said that lime limonoids stay active longer in the blood than green tea or dark chocolate to mop up free radicals. Limes have been used to help prevent gastric inflammation and are also used by diabetics to help manage this illness. Most people recognize limes for the boost in Vitamin C that they provide, but the health benefits range from liver detoxification to preventing colds and flu germs from spreading. Please consult your doctor if you are on any medication.
