BEST ISLANDER JOHN TAVARES 1255 Hempstead Tpke., Uniondale. 516-794-9300. islanders.nhl.com The Islanders may have moved a little further west to Brooklyn, but the four-time Stanley Cup champs will always be Long Island’s team—and John Tavares, our hero. The 25-year-old Ontario native rebounded last year from two injuryplagued seasons and showed that, when healthy, he can produce with the best of them. Tavares, the reigning Best Islander champ, accumulated a career-best 86 points, 38 of which came on goals he scored, also a career high. Tavares’ regular season performance garnered him the third-most points for the Hart Memorial Trophy, which recognizes the most valuable player in the sport. Tavares led his Islanders to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the fi rst time since the 2012- 2013 season. Given the amount of talent on the roster, this is a much-deserved honor for one of the game’s best! BEST ISLANDER - ALL-TIME BOBBY NYSTROM 1255 Hempstead Tpke., Uniondale. 516-794-9300. islanders.nhl.com Bobby Nystrom last played in the NHL in 1986, but the man who is affectionately known as “Mr. Islander,” remains one of the most beloved to ever play for the franchise. Where do we begin with Nystrom? He spent his entire 14-year NHL career with the Isles, netting 235 goals and 278 assists along the way. More importantly, Nystrom was a member of the Islanders ‘80s dynasty, when the team won four straight Stanley Cup titles from 1980 to 1983. The 63-year-old was a fi erce competitor on the ice, so it probably comes as no surprise that he recently competed in an exhausting Ironman competition—which tests the physical and mental endurance of even the most prolifi c athlete! BEST LONG ISLAND DUCK LEW FORD 3 Court House Dr., Central Islip. 631-940-3825. liducks.com Lew Ford, the Long Island Ducks’ most prolifi c batter, successfully defended his title of Best Long Island Duck following one of his more unconventional seasons with the Atlantic League baseball team. Still, Ford managed to compile 108 hits and was second in the team in RBIs, with 63. Despite the shortened season, Ford tied for the team league in doubles. The outfi elder, who fi rst joined the team in 2009, also serves as a coach, making him one of the most important athletes in the clubhouse—and a fan favorite.
