BROOKLYN MEDIA GROUP NOVEMBER 25 - DECEMBER 1, 2016 31 In November 1991, Silver Lake Specialized Care Center opened its Ventilator-Dependent Special Care Unit. This unit was the rst Nursing Home in the State of New York to be granted permission for this special program. The facility initially had 8 ventilator beds available and then over time expanded to 40 certied beds located on two units. For the past 25 years, advancement in medical technology has enabled people to live longer. Through the change in attitudes toward the role of Skilled Nursing Homes, many facilities have revised their services available to their residents from routine nursing type care to a subacute level of care. From the beginning, Silver Lake Specialized Care Center developed a Respiratory Therapy department which provided 24-hour state of the art respiratory therapy services. Nursing sta on the ventilator units are specially trained to render a high quality of care. Emphasis is placed on Quality of Life with a return to as many homelike activities as possible. Ventilatordependent residents if alert not only are able to get out-of-bed and sit in the chair, but they are able to go and participate in activities in the recreation department or merely sit out on our patio if they wish. When appropriate they are able to go out on trips Staten Island Yankees are a favorite, or attend a special family function. The sta of this unit are very special people who have formed a rapport with these residents. The morale is extraordinarily high with each of them actively seeking to improve the quality of life of these very special residents. Silver Lake Specialized Care Center is looking towards a continued success for Ventilator/Respiratory residents. 718-447-7800 275 CASTLETON AVENUE | STATEN ISLAND, NY 10301
