Spring Events at the Queens Museum The Queens Museum is located in Flushing Meadows Park, just around the corner from LeFrak City. This spring, the Museum is offering some extra special events for the entire family. LEFRAK CITY COURIER | WWW.QNS.COM | APRIL, 2017 23 MARINELLA SENATORE: La Piazza Universale/Social Stages April 9–July 30 Italian artist Marinella Senatore will open a new exhibition at the Queens Museum on April 9 entitled “Protest Forms: Memory and Celebration.” The opening day will feature musicians, dancers, poets and activists “to explore the many forms and rich legacies of protest in New York City and across the United States,” according to the museum’s website. Senatore is an Italian visual artist whose work, including performances, paintings, installations, photography and sound pieces, focus on social themes and urban issues, according to her website. Senatore has had solo exhibitions at numerous art spaces internationally, including Mot International, London; Museum of Contemporary Art, Santa Barbara, California; and Castello di Rivoli, Turin, Italy. Selected awards include the MAXXI Prize, Maxxi Museum, Rome; Fellowship for Young Artist of Castello di Rivoli, Turin; Affiliated Fellowship, American Academy in Rome; and Gotham Prize, New York. Queens Museum Spring Film Series Wednesdays, April 5 – May 17, 2pm-5pm (No screening April 26) The Museum presents its weekly film series featuring a mix of old and new classic movies. Mark Ethan Toporek introduces each film and also leads a post-screening discussion. He is a member of the Actors’ Studio and has appeared in numerous films including The Secret Lives of Dentists, The Confession, and Lesser Prophets. He has been presenting the Film Series at the Queens Museum since 1998. Here’s what’s on tap: Apr 5: The Imitation Game (2014), directed by Morten Tyldum. Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Alan Turing, the real-life hero who kept a personal secret while racing to break the Nazi code during WWII. Co-stars Keira Knightly and Matthew Goode. Apr 12: Five Fingers (1952), directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. A WWII spy thriller based on true events, with James Mason as a valet involved in the selling of British secrets to the Germans. Also starring Danielle Darrieux and Michael Rennie. Apr 19: Notorious (1945), directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant mix romance and espionage when she is recruited into the American intelligence service to spy on a local group of German exiles under suspicion. Also starring Claude Rains. May 3: Indiscreet (1958), directed by Stanley Donen. In this sophisticated comedy, Ingrid Bergman portrays a renowned London based actress who is romanced by a suave American financier, played by Cary Grant. May 10: To be or Not To be (1942), directed by Ernst Lubitsch. In this black comedy, Jack Benny has the role of a lifetime as the leader of a Polish theater troupe who becomes involved in espionage during WWII. Also starring Carole Lombard and Robert Stack. May 17: Some Like it Hot (1959), directed by Billy Wilder. This classic comedy stars Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis who witness a mob hit, then elude their pursuers disguised as women in an all-girl band.
