LIC: An Evolving Fashion District Bartos Screening Room 11:15AM - 12:15PM Long a prime location for apparel warehouses and factories, LIC is now also experiencing an influx of major retailers’ creative departments. Fashion companies are leveraging the nearby photo and film studios, manufacturing facilities, architecture and window decor, and creative services, all of which are located here. This panel will explore the various industries related to fashion, how they connect, and what’s needed to further develop LIC as a burgeoning Fashion District. Luis Nava Brooks Brothers Luis Nava has +10 years of Supply Chain experience in the retail space. He manages the LIC Factory where 230 associates produce 1.5 million ties/year and for Brooks Brothers NA Alterations department where 260 tailors service +132 stores. Paula Kirby (Moderator) Plaxall Paula Kirby is Managing Director of Plaxall, here in Long Island City. Prior to joining Plaxall in 2014, Paula worked in Europe for over 20 years, notably as Head of Marketing for Prada based in Milan, and as Deputy Director of Prada UK and Head of Licensing for Alfred Dunhill while in London. A Queens native, Paula serves on the Board of Trustees of the Queens Museum, the Board of Advisors of Mount Sinai Queens, the Real Estate Committee of the Queens Chamber of Commerce, and as Co-Chair of the Long Island City Business Improvement District (BID) Expansion project, among other civic activities around the borough. Daniel Arsham Snarkitecture Daniel Arsham founded Snarkitecture with partner Alex Mustonen in 2007. This architecture collaboration has included work with fashion brands, interior and architectural design, and a complete line of functional design objects. Prior to Snarkitecture, Arsham created stage designs and toured with legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham’s Dance Company. Arsham’s work has been shown at PS1 in New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, The Athens Bienniale in Athens, Greece, The New Museum In New York, Mills College Art Museum in Oakland, California and Carré d’Art de Nîmes, France among others. Carrie White GUM Studios Carrie White is the Founder of GUM Studios. Prior to starting GUM Studios, Carrie worked freelancing with producers and prop stylists in the print advertising world. In 2009 Carrie opened Factory Studios after she saw the need for small to medium sized soundproofed sound stages in the New York area. After much success with Factory Carrie moved her studio to Long Island City, and reopened as GUM Studios. GUM is a Level 1 QPF that caters to high-fashion commercial and photo shoots, as well as tv and film shoots. Joshua Schneps (Introduction) Schneps Communications/ LIC Flea & Food Joshua Schneps is the Founder and President of LIC Flea & Food and Astoria Flea & Food markets. Joshua Schneps is also Co-Publisher of Schneps Communications, the largest privately owned publisher of community newspapers, magazines, local websites and business events serving the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. Dennis Freedman Barneys New York Dennis Freedman is the award-winning creative director at Barneys New York. Dennis serves as curator of the BNY windows, along with overseeing photo and video imaging, graphic and store design, and visual merchandising. Prior to BNY, Dennis served as creative director of W.
