What do you say to a fi refi ghter who lost someone who they desperately tried to rescue from the clutches of death? These two questions come to mind in the wake of a horrifi c week in Queens that saw the shocking death of a fi refi ghter in Ridgewood and fi ve young lives snuffed out in a fast-moving Queens Village house fi re. Every time they head out for another tour of duty, each fi refi ghter knows full well the risks that come with the job. Their main duty is to save the life of a complete stranger, even if it means putting their own lives at stake to do it. Firefi ghter William Tolley of Ladder Company 135 knew it when he ascended up that bucket ladder in Ridgewood to fi ght a fi re from the rooft op, only to take a fatal fall in an accident that remains under investigation. It’s difficult to find solace in an incident like this, but the outpouring of support from the Glendale community where Ladder 135 is based demonstrated the neighborhood’s appreciation for Tolley’s sacrifi ce — not to mention the infi nite other sacrifi ces fi refi ghters across the city make every day to keep us safe. And yet, as we were still mourning Tolley’s loss, we were confronted by the heartbreaking tragedy in Queens Village in which fi ve young people — the oldest just 20, the youngest just 2 — were killed aft er a blaze ignited in their home. Firefi ghters arrived on the scene four minutes aft er getting the 911 call, as Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro recalled. Though they worked fast and risked everything to get the victims out of the building, none of the victims could be saved. It left many at the scene shaken to the core, and compounded the grief of firefighters already mourning a lost brother in arms. So how does one answer the questions asked above? We’ve tried to come up with an adequate answer, but words really fail us. All we can advise our readers to do is to support the Fire Department in whatever way they can. If you can aff ord to do so, donate to the FDNY Foundation, which — among its many other causes — helps support the families of fi refi ghters who made the ultimate sacrifi ce while on duty. It also funds various initiatives designed to promote fi re prevention and keep New Yorkers safe. To fi nd out more, visit www.fdnyfoundation. org.
