are fi xed fi rmly to the fl oor
so they will not slip. Put noslip
strips on tile and wooden
fl oors. Keep areas where you
walk tidy. Do not leave books,
papers, clothes, and shoes on
the fl oor or stairs. Have handrails
on both sides of the stairs,
and make sure they are tightly
fastened. Hold the handrails
when you use the stairs, going
up or down. Make sure there
is good lighting with light
switches at the top and bottom
of stairs and on each end of a
long hall. Keep electric cords
and telephone wires near walls
and away from walking paths.
Personal Emergency Response
System (PERS): If
you are concerned about falling,
think about getting a personal
emergency response
system. That way if you fall
or need emergency help, you
can push a button on a special
necklace or bracelet that you
wear at all times to alert 911.
There is a fee for this service,
and it is not usually covered
by insurance.
There are programs in NYC
that offer assistance with improving
home safety for older
adults. NY Foundation for Senior
Citizens (212-962-7655)
conducts home safety audits
and repairs. BronxWorks (718-
299-0300) has a minor repair
program. Met Council’s Project
Repair (212-453-9542) offers
home repairs.

March 2019 marks the
Centennial Anniversary of
organized civic activity in
the Spencer Estate community.
Many men and woman
played vital roles in this
monumental achievement.
In celebrating this milestone
and honoring those
dedicated men and woman
our association will be implementing
a ‘One Hundred for
One Hundred’ membership
drive.
Our goal for the upcoming
year is to enroll 100 members
to commemorate our neighborhood’s
100 year celebration
of stellar community
service. Your help is needed
to ensure a successful campaign.
For additional information,
or to participate in this
important event e-mail with
the subject Spencer Estate to
gghhh55@aol.com.
Community footnote:
We encourage all area residents
to take part in the 45th
Precinct’s ‘Build the Block
Meeting’ on Wednesday, January
23, at 6 p.m., Villa Maria
Academy, 3335 Country Club
Road. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
and refreshments will be
served. This is an opportunity
to identify and address
our neighborhoods’ public
safety concerns through productive
collaboration with
our local police department.
Pat Caruso and our
friends at Community Board
10 have alerted us to the increasing
number of Social
Security scams targeting our
senior citizens. Scammers
may claim your Social Security
account is being suspended
and phish for vital
information. Safeguard your
Social Security number - it is
precious information. Please
do not fall victim to these heinous
predators.
Keeping with time-honored
tradition our meetings
will reconvene in March. For
additional information about
the Spencer Estate Civic Association
e-mail with the
subject Spencer Estate to
gghh55@aol.com.
Until next time… remember:
