The New York Botanical Garden,
Bronx River Parkway (Exit 7W) at
Fordham Road, will offer the following
events and programs:
Lilac Weekend and Plein-Air Invitational,
Saturday, May 4 and Sunday,
May 5, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: With its fl oral
clusters, sweet fragrance, and heartshaped
leaves, the lilac is nature’s
love letter to spring. The Burn Family
Lilac Collection takes the spotlight as
we celebrate this American garden favorite
in all of its glorious forms, colors,
and aromas with plein-air painting, music,
guided tours, and talks.
Fourth Annual Plein-Air Invitational,
Saturday, May 4, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Every
year, to help mark the Garden’s
rites of spring, distinguished plein-air
artists from throughout the Northeast
gather across the grounds in a public
display of painterly talent and nature
appreciation.
Led by plein-air master James Gurney,
participating artists work in various
media while engaging with Garden
visitors. Also joining will be artists affi
liated with the NYC chapter of Urban
Sketchers, an international nonprofi t
dedicated to fostering a global community
of artists who practice on-location
drawing.
Participating artists are Noel Darvie,
Jason Das, Stephen Doherty, Frank
Guida, James Gurney, Jeanette Gurney,
Veronica Lawlor, John Varriano,
and Susan Weintraub.
Plein-Air Drop-In and Draw, Saturday,
May 4 and Sunday, May 5, 11 a.m.
to 4 p.m.: Everyone is an artist! Draw
inspiration from the Garden as a pleinair
artist would. Drop in, grab a stool
and materials and create an image of
the Garden to take home. Instructors
Mark Leibowitz (Saturday) and Naomi
Campbell (Sunday) offer guided tips
every half hour.
Lilac Garden Tours with Q&A, Saturday,
May 4 and Sunday, May 5, 11
a.m., noon, 1, 2, and 3 p.m.: Meet at the
entrance to the Lilac Collection.
Deanna Curtis, NYBG’s Curator of
Woody Plants, will be on hand to share
her expertise on this historic collection.
Live Music among the Lilacs, Sunday,
May 5, at 1, 2, and 3 p.m.: String
Quartet by so&so, so&so (symphony
orchestra and select others) is a curating
collective whose symphony-centric
performances feature young professional,
top-caliber musicians from
all over the world. For its debut season,
NY-based so&so has partnered
with the Brooklyn Landmark, Brooklyn
Army Terminal, and Hartford Ballet to
present a variety of projects including
symphony performances, opera and
original ballet.
Biophilia: Sharing our #plantlove,
ongoing: Discover the Enid A. Haupt
Conservatory’s permanent collections
anew—palms, cycads, Monstera, ferns,
cacti, and so many more—through the
lens of the curators and gardeners who
care for them. Explore their love for
plants and the stories they reveal about
nature, adaptation, and human culture.
Fresh from the Garden Tastings,
through November 3: Saturday, May 4
and Sunday, May 5, 2 to 2:30 p.m. and
4 to 4:30 p.m.: Cooking demonstrations,
presented by Whole Foods Market
®, encourage families to get handson
with healthy cooking. New recipes
featuring plants grown in the Edible
Academy are offered each week. Edible
Academy staff will demonstrate
family-friendly recipes using seasonal
vegetables, fruits, and herbs.
Dig! Plant! Grow! Wake Up, Garden!,
through Sunday, May 12: Saturday, May
4, 1:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Sunday, May 5, 10
a.m. to 5:30 p.m.: Celebrate spring at the
Edible Academy! Get started gardening
by sowing seeds, digging, and watering.
Explore our soil and learn more about
compost with our wild, wiggly worms
and take home your own worm castings
to “get growing” at home.
Budding Botanist. through June
7: Saturday, May 4 amd Sunday, May
5, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.: Stand up for
plants! Become a plant champion in
the Children’s Garden this spring. Discover
bulbs and buds as they wake up
and seeds sprout. Search for plants
and animals in the Children’s Garden
as they grow and change through the
season. Make a seed sprouting tape to
plant at home and design a button that
proclaims why you love plants.
Bird Walk, Saturday, May 4, 11 a.m.:
Bring your binoculars and walk the Garden
grounds with a bird expert. You’ll
search for our feathered friends and
learn more about bird-friendly habitats,
passage birds, and those that make a
permanent home at the Garden.

ecosystems both big and small.

Family Art Project: Silky Caterpillar
Sustenance: Celebrate the brilliance
of caterpillars! Moth caterpillars have
the ability to create cocoons from the
very silk within them. When they need
to fi nd new leaves to eat or to escape
danger, moth caterpillars release a silk
line from within. Come explore your
own silky strength by making your own
cocoon, wrapping within it a message
or picture of something you would like
to transform. Free, and admission to
the grounds is free until noon. Spring

Post: Get up-close and personal with
insects and other critters that creep,
crawl and cruise around the Hudson
River Valley in springtime. Check out
live and preserved insects, cocoons
and chrysalides with entomologists
and creature wranglers Lawrence
Forcella and Lindsay Velazco. Spring
Insect Day event. On the grounds, 10

Explore Wave Hill with entomologist
Lawrence Forcella of God of
Insects to hunt for native creatures in
their garden habitats. Appropriate for
ages eight and up with an adult. Spring

with complex, screen-print collages of
