FREE BROOKLYN!
Whoever said “nothing in life is free” never visited
Brooklyn Borough Hall. Borough President
Adams has focused his administration on linking
Brooklynites to a wide range of resources that
share in common a bottom line of zero dollars and
zero cents. This common-sense approach to public
service has not been commonplace historically in
the borough.
“As a borough, we have historically left too many
resources on the table; we can no longer afford to
make those mistakes of the past,” said Borough
President Adams. “My team and I are constantly
seeking out free programs and organizations that
provide them to connect to residents that can really
use the helping hand. The more we look, the more
we find; that means the more we can share!”
It was Borough President Adams’s goal to amass
all of the low or no-cost services in one easy-toaccess
10.23.15
place, and the Women’s City Club of New
York (WCC), a citywide non-profit civic organization
celebrating its 100th anniversary, proved to be a
strong partner. In September, following several
months of research, they unveiled the 2015 Guide
to Services and Resources in Brooklyn, a first-ofits
kind collaboration to bring together listings for
446 organizations in 57 neighborhoods across the
borough, translated into Chinese, French, Russian,
and Spanish. In addition to the limited number of
hard copies available at Brooklyn Borough Hall,
there is a link on Brooklyn-USA.org to WCC’s interactive
online portal for the guide.
Speaking of guides, Borough President Adams
has put out English and Spanish versions of his
Brooklyn Parent Guide to Public Education, a free
handbook for families to help navigate free City
resources for students. The primer, first made
available on Brooklyn-USA.org in September, addresses
important educational issues such as pre-
K enrollment, high school admissions, career and
technical schools, special education, and charter
schools. It also provides contact information for
various offices in the New York City Department of
Education as well as Community Education Councils
representing parents in Brooklyn
and citywide.
Beyond these handbooks, Borough
President Adams continues to seek
out opportunities to make Brooklyn
Borough Hall a place where residents
can access free resources, including
the services offered in his Constituent
Assistance Center and his Topographical
Bureau. Earlier this year, he
joined with the American Red Cross
and FDNY Foundation to hand out hundreds
of free smoke alarms as part
of his ongoing effort to advance fire
safety. His office has hosted free training
sessions for Brooklynites on topics
like CPR, non-profit capacity building,
and solar energy. Additionally, he is
offering free flu shots this fall for the
second straight year, in partnership
with the Visiting Nurse Service of New
York.
The best things in life are free – and
you can get many of them at Brooklyn
