Wii
A lot of hardcore gamers
look at this system with
disdain, labeling it a gimmick
that briefly changed gaming for
the worse. But, motion controls,
when done right, can change the
way you look at games.
Although a lot a bad titles
were released for the Wii, you
can’t discredit its success. It
got older adults to play. In many
senior homes, they played Wii
Sports, which included bowling
and tennis. It got kids to pretend
to swing a bat.
It didn’t appeal to the hardcore
gamer but it did something better.
It appealed to everyone. Not to
mention, it has some amazing
offerings such as “Super Mario
Galaxy” 1 and 2 and “Super Smash
Bros. Brawl.” It sold over 100 million
units. And although it ran out of
steam as the novelty of moving
while playing ended, no one can
deny its place in the gaming world.
Nintendo DS
The company’s highest selling piece of hardware (154 million units) is pure
evidence that you don’t need to have the most powerful hardware to win
the race. Although its competitor Sony’s Playstation Portable had superior
graphics, the DS won the race.
Like it often does, Nintendo beat its competition by rocking the boat and
changing how gamers play. It added a second screen and a stylus which, like
the Wii, opened the possibilities of how one can develop a game.
Because of its massive reach, it created some amazing software for every
genre. Nintendo improved upon its original design to make the unit sleeker and
easier to take around, or harder if you got the later XL system.
Nintendo really needed a hit and it got its biggest one here. And, it spawned
a sequel, the Nintendo 3DS, which is fantastic in its own right.
